About MODIS

• Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
• 250m resolution (bands 1-2)
• 500m resolution (bands 3-7)
• 1km resolution (bands 8-36)
• WRS-2 orbit, 2,330km wide swath
• .5 - 1 day repeat cycle
• On board EOS Terra and Aqua
• Wide range of daily and composite products
  available
• Direct Broadcast
• Particularly useful for time-series analysis and
  near real time applications. Data since 2000.

• 102 Total (as of July 3, 2007)
• 28 Countries
• 20 in the US

SSEC

• WisconsinView is a program at the Space Science
  and Engineering Center, UW-Madison
• SSEC is 200 scientists mostly working
  meteorology, atmospheric sciences, remote
  sensing, software and sensor development
• Data archives, GOES and MODIS Direct Broadcast
  reception facility

SSEC Direct Broadcast

• SeaSpace X-Band Direct Reception Facility.
• 4.5 Meter auto tracking dish in operation since
  2001 (25,000 passes collected).
• 28 CPU Linux Cluster.
• 24-30 Products Generated twice a day.
• All software used Open Source (except IDL).
• Aqua/Terra conflicts resolved with East/West
  partners.

Wisconsin-Today History

• Daily MODIS true color online since 2002
  (pre-dates WisconsinView)
• 2007 MODIS-Today started at SSEC direct broadcast
  group
• 2008 WisconsinView switched to MODIS-Today
  source.
• 2008 Scaled up for other AV states

• Tested for Wyoming and Virginia 2007
• Expanded to whole consortium (34 except HI and
  AK)
• 30 quick-look products (JPEGS and GeoTIFFs, 3
  band combinations).
• Auto down load scripts and instructions

Summary

• Direct Broadcast enables customized products and
  near real-time access.
• Daily MODIS GeoTIFF and JPEG Imagery is available
  for all AmericaView states.
• States are adding value to their downloads (KML,
  daily imagery widgets, WMS).
• Relatively easy way to provide dynamic content to
  your webpages, leveraging NASA and StateViews
• Engage and inspire the public about Earth
  observation.
