Community Education Who Are We and What Do We
Do? Presented by Gerri Penney, M.Ed. Community

2Goal
To educate the citizens of Palm Beach County in
taking steps to prevent fires and unintentional
injuries and in being prepared to handle
emergencies should they arise, thus saving lives
and property.
3What do we do?
- Life Safety presentations to schools,
businesses, home owners associations, community
and civic groups, etc. - In-services for teachers, community partners,
institute for active aging, other county
departments, etc.
4Presentations
- 27 regular topics such as
- CPR, Fire drills, Fire extinguishers First Aid,
Career days, Bike safety, etc.
Presentations about any fire safety or injury
prevention topic can be customized for your group
5In-Services
- Groups of teachers, employees, health care
workers, maintenance staff can request specific
in-services for their particular need. - In many cases CEUs can be provided or
certification to meet OSHA or JCAHO requirements
6What do we do?
- Juvenile firesetter educational intervention
programs with families, liaising with county wide
law enforcement agencies and fire departments - Mentoring other fire departments in comprehensive
injury prevention programs such as Risk Watch

8Risk Watch addresses the eight risk areas that
kill the greatest number of kids
9Risk Watch
Teaches injury prevention behaviors from
preschool through grade eight
10What do we do?
- Direct service of intervention devices such as
smoke alarms in cooperation with operations and
volunteers - Targeting at-risk populations such as seniors
with Vial of Life and Who Do I Call to Get the
Help I Need?
11Installation of Smoke Alarms
Firefighters and Volunteers install free smoke
alarms and perform complimentary home safety
surveys.
12Vial of Life
- Homeowners are given kits to fill out and place
on their fridge door - These forms give paramedics information on your
medical history - In an emergency, we know how to treat you and can
take this info with us, to the hospital

9-1-1 Know the emergency number for Fire,
Police and Medical help 2-1-1 Know the
non- emergency number for help with
community resources
