  • Forty years ago, Walter Pauk developed what is
    known as the Cornell note taking technique to
    help Cornell University students better organize
    their notes.
  • Today, Pauk's note taking technique is probably
    the most widely used system throughout the United
    States.

  • Why Take Notes? Why Cornell?
  • To help take organized notes.
  • To help identify keywords and concepts from a
    lecture.
  • To help scan notes to locate important
    information while studying.
  • To get good grades!

How to Setup Your Paper
  • Use a piece of notebook paper.
  • Use only one side of the paper.
  • Draw a vertical line 2-1/2 inches from the left
    side of the paper.
  • Write your name, course, and date at the top of
    each page.
  • Write a title for the lecture.

Taking Notes
  • Write all ideas/concepts on the right side of the
    page.
  • Be sure to skip one line between ideas.
  • Mark ideas that go together with an asterisk .
  • Use abbreviations.

Recall Key Points
  • Review the notes soon after the lecture.
  • Make sure notes are clear.
  • Make sure information makes sense.
  • Write key points, ideas, or questions in the left
    column, matching it with the details in the right
    column.

Summarize
  • Write a summary at the bottom of the page.
  • Mention all key points.
  • Use both columns of your notes to study for tests.
