  • Hi! My name is Cassidy. Today I will be talking
    to you about the biology of the Monarch
    butterfly ENJOY!!!

Monarch-Egg
  • Chorion-is a hard outer shell on the eggprotects
    developing pupa
  • Wax-there is a layer of wax so the egg doesnt
    dry out
  • Mycropyles-gt1 tiny funnel-shaped openings at one
    end of the egg
  • Ridges

Monarch-Larva
  • The larva stage for a butterfly is called the
    caterpillar.
  • The caterpillar has only 6 true legs, but they
    have 10 false legs called prolegs.
  • Oxygen enters the thorax abdomen through little
    openings called spiricales.

Monarch-Pupa
  • When it pupates, it splits its exoskeleton
    and wiggles out of its larva skin.
  • Cremaster-a spiny
  • appendage at the end of the abdomen

Monarch-Adult
  • After about two weeks the chrysalis splits
    and out comes a BEAUTIFUL Monarch butterfly!!!

Monarch Migration
  • North to South, here go the monarchs, there
    journey to the mountains of Mexico or the coast
    of California. Mate and die, the Monarchs life is
    short but helpful.
