INTRODUCTION

• Protocols used in ad hoc networks today
• is based on one-to-one communication
• to avoid multiple access interference (MAI)
• ?this approach does NOT scale!
• How to increase the order capacity?
• Two approaches
• Increasing the amount of information a
  transmitting node relays in each transmission
• ?Network Coding (NC)
• Enabling a receiver to decode multiple concurrent
  transmissions.
• ?Multiple-packet Reception (MPR)

CONCLUSION

• Two results
• NC does NOT increase the order capacity of ad hoc
  networks for multi-pair unicast applications!
• MPR does increase the order capacity by a factor
  of T(log n)!
• MPR is more attractive than NC!
• Combination of MPR and NC is the best approach to
  make ad hoc networks scale!
