2
Diabetes Awareness
  • Diabetes?
  • Facts?
  • Risk factors?
  • Management/control?
  • What are LIONS doing?

3
Diabetes Awareness
MISCONCEPTION
  • Real diabetes ie insulin
  • Mild diabetes ie diet tablets
  • BOTH ARE DANGEROUS

4
Diabetes Awareness
  • Diabetes is a chronic condition, is due to the
    pancreas' inability to produce,or ineffectiveness
in using insulin correctly, and so one's blood
sugar levels are not always optimal.

5
Diabetes Awareness
  • Diabetes is a disorder in which the body is
unable to store and use food energy properly.

6
Diabetes Awareness
  • The main source of fuel for human bodies is a
    simple sugar called glucose.

7
Diabetes Awareness
  • During digestion, the pancreas should produce
insulin, which converts food into glucose to give
    the body energy.

8
Diabetes Awareness
  • Typical foods that break down to glucose and
    produce energy
  • maize, bread, potatoes, rice, milk, honey sugar,
    fruits and vegetables

9
Diabetes Awareness
  • However, when someone has diabetes, one of the
    following conditions applies

10
Diabetes Awareness
  • the pancreas does not produce insulin
  • the pancreas produces a small amount of insulin
  • cells do not respond to the insulin that is
    produced.

11
Diabetes Awareness
  • As a result, glucose is neither absorbed nor
stored. It builds up in the blood and spills into
the urine. Thus, the body loses its main source
    of fuel.

12
Diabetes Awareness
  • One of the major causes of blindness in the world
    today is Diabetes.
  • Approximately 50 000 000 people in the world
    today are
  • unnecessarily blind.
  • To a large extent this could have been avoided by
    good control of blood sugar.

13
Diabetes Awareness
Blinding Facts
  • Diabetics are 25 times more likely to go blind
  • than Non diabetics
  • 100 of diabetics eyes are affected
  • 10 of diabetics go blind
  • USA UK diabetes is MOST common cause of
blindness in 20-65 year age grp
  • Statistics not available for SA but similiar

14
Diabetes Awareness
What should every Diabetic know about his eyes?
  • Diabetes puts his vision at risk
  • Regular eye examinations are essential
  • Diabetic eye disease can be minimised and even
prevented by good long term control of blood
  • glucose and blood pressure
  • Diabetic eye disease if found early enough
  • is treatable

15
Diabetes Awareness
  • Ref WHO, 171 million people in world diabetic.
    Increasing rapidly. 366m
  • USA alone, well over 10million with diabetes.
According to the ADA, another 5.5 million
Americans unaware that they have diabetes. Stats.
are similar in many other countries.

16
Diabetes Awareness
  • Obesity plays a major role.
  • 1 in 3 babies born in many first world countries
around the world to-day will become obese.
  • Emerging countries like Mexico and South Africa
are known to also be at risk.

17
Diabetes Awareness
  • DIABETES RISK FACTORS

18
DIABETES AWARENESS
  • Are you

19
Diabetes Awareness
  • more than 45 years old
  • overweight
  • a person with high blood pressure (at
    or above 140/90)

20
DIABETES AWARENESS
  • from a family with a history of
  • diabetes
  • lacking in regular exercise?
  • a woman who has given birth to a baby weighing
more than four kilograms (nine pound)

21
DIABETES AWARENESS
  • If you answered
  • yes
  • to one
  • or more of these questions,

22
DIABETES AWARENESS
YOU MAY HAVE DIABETES!!
23
Diabetes Awareness
  • Millions of people are unaware
  • that they have diabetes.
  • The symptoms of diabetes include

24
Diabetes Awareness
  • unusual thirst
  • frequent urination
  • unexplained weight loss.

25
DIABETES AWARENESS
  • infections, itchiness, skin rashes
  • moodiness / behaviour
  • disturbances / temper tantrums
  • lack of concentration /
  • poor memory

26
Diabetes Awareness
  • Basically there are two types of diabetes - a
genetic form TYPE 1 caused by
  • destruction of the insulin-producing cells of
    the pancreas.

27
Diabetes Awareness
  • Type 1 diabetes can be hereditary.
  • 5 to 10 of all cases of diabetes are type 1.
  • Type 1 diabetes most often occurs in children
and young adults. Although it is being seen in
    younger and younger children.

28
Diabetes Awareness
  • The peak years for developing type 1 diabetes
    are
  • 10 to 12 in girls
  • 12 to 14 in boys.

29
Diabetes Awareness
  • Persons with type 1 diabetes must receive daily
    injections of insulin.
  • The symptoms of type 1 diabetes are usually
    sudden and severe.

30
Diabetes Awareness
  • A so-called "late onset diabetes" TYPE 2, which
may be acquired during one's lifetime.
  • Type 2 diabetes - is a disorder resulting from
the body's inability to produce insulin or use
    insulin properly.

31
Diabetes Awareness
  • This type of diabetes usually affects persons
who are more than 45 years of age, are
overweight, and who do not exercise.
  • Today, however, young people are increasingly
being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

32
Diabetes Awareness
  • 90 to 95 of all cases of diabetes are Type 2.
  • Diet and exercise will help control type 2
    diabetes in some cases.

33
Diabetes Awareness
  • Persons with type 2 diabetes may take medication
or they may require insulin injections.
  • ?medication rest of the persons life.
  • Persons with type 2 diabetes may experience no
symptoms at all. By the time warning signs
appear, the person may already have type 2
    diabetes.

34
Diabetes Awareness
  • Gestational diabetes
  • develops and lasts throughout pregnancy.
  • Two to five percent of pregnant women develop
    gestational diabetes.
  • These women are at increased risk of developing
type 2 diabetes at a later date.

35
Diabetes Awareness
The Complications
of Diabetes include
36
Diabetes Awareness
  • blindness
  • kidney disease
  • nerve disease (which can result
  • in lower limb amputations)
  • heart disease.

Diabetes Awareness
  • WHAT CAN
  • YOUR
  • ZONE/CLUB DO?

51
Diabetes Awareness
  • The mission statement of the Lions Diabetes
    Awareness Program is

52
Diabetes Awareness
  • To conduct and support local and large-scale
    efforts leading to the
  • control and treatment of diabetes and its
    complications through
  • education, prevention, and research.

53
Diabetes Awareness
  • Organise and run Diabetes Awareness programmes at
Fairs, Fetes, in Retirement Homes etc.
  • . Conduct clinics where qualified personnel (i.e.
Doctors, Nurses etc) can do a
  • simple test in shopping malls. The cost per
    test is about R7.50, maybe
  • less.

54
Diabetes Awareness
  • For starters get clinics going. The companies
involved in the marketing of the testing
materials can be contacted in an effort to obtain
    reduced prices.

55
Diabetes Awareness
  • What a golden opportunity to increase interest in
    Lionism and membership.

56
Diabetes Awareness
  • The following is the sort of notice you can put
    in your local newspapers
  • LIONS CLUB OF ------
  • DIABETIC AWARNESS CLINIC.

57
Diabetes Awareness
  • One of the major causes of blindness in the world
    today is Diabetes.

  • A so-called "late onset diabetes" which may be
acquired during one's lifetime, this now may
require medication for the rest of the persons
    life.
  • Therefore control of blood sugar is of utmost
    importance.
  • A major project of Lions Clubs Worldwide in
the prevention of unnecessary blindness is
    "Diabetes Awareness."

59
Diabetes Awareness
  • In playing their part the Lions Club of -----
will be conducting regular Blood sugar tests.
These tests are a free service to the community.
A qualified nursing sister will carry them out.
  • The first/next such clinic will be held on
Saturday 16 November from 9.00 to 10.30 on the
    grassy area outside -----------.
