2
Galatians
  • The Gospel came from Christ

3
Style
  • A letter of rebuke
  • Sub-style Deliberative rhetoric
  • Argumentation to persuade people to change their
    behavior
  • Each point is made in an affirmation which is
followed by as many proofs as necessary
  • An affirmation is a positive statement of fact

4
Galatians
  • Theme There is only one gospel
  • A gospel of salvation through Christ alone
  • A gospel that does not include the Mosaic law
  • Three affirmations
  • Personal
  • Doctrinal
  • Practical

5
Affirmation 1
  • Gal. 111-12
  • The gospel Paul taught came not from man, but
    from Christ
  • Proofs
  • Paul now has to offer proof
  • The proofs will aim mainly at the not from man
    part of the affirmation
  • But he will also have to prove the from Christ

6
Proof from Pauls background
  • Gal. 113-14
  • Paul was a Jew
  • Paul persecuted the church
  • Paul was a rising star among the Pharisees
  • All of these things would have made Paul more
likely to include the Mosaic law in the gospel if
    he made it up himself

7
Proof from Chronology
  • DATE EVENT REFERENCE
  • 34 AD Conversion Acts 91-22
  • 34-36 In Arabia Gal 117
  • 36 In Damascus again Acts 923-25
  • 36 First Jerusalem visit Acts 926-29
  • 15 days only Gal 118-20
  • 36-44 In Syria Cilicia Gal 121-24
  • 44-46 In Antioch of Syria Acts 1125-26
  • 47 2nd Jerusalem visit Acts 1127-30
  • Incident with Titus Gal 21-10
  • Return to Antioch Acts 1225

8
Proof from Chronology
  • DATE EVENT REFERENCE
  • 47-48 1st Missionary Journey Acts 131-1427
  • 48-49 In Antioch of Syria Acts 1428
  • Peters visit Gal 211-21
  • 49 Galatian letter written
  • 50 3rd Jerusalem visit Acts 151-35

9
Proof from Chronology
  • The proof is that
  • Paul received the gospel from Christ
  • Paul had no opportunity to be taught by apostles
  • In the Titus affair,
  • The apostles were told by Paul about the gospel
    he was teaching
  • The apostles accepted Pauls teaching as from
    Christ

10
Proof by Rebuke
  • Gal 211-14
  • Paul did not copy the apostles
  • Paul had to rebuke Peter for error
  • Peter apparently accepted the rebuke
  • Shortly after, in Jerusalem, Peter stands in
favor of Gentiles having been saved without
circumcision and keeping the Mosaic law (Acts 15)
  • Paul uses this 3rd proof to introduce his 2nd
    affirmation
  • But that is for next week

11
Summary
  • The gospel Paul taught was not from man, but from
    Christ
  • Pauls background would have led to a different
    gospel
  • Paul only had opportunity to learn the gospel
    from Christ
  • Even the apostles had to accept the divine origin
of that gospel, even when one of them was rebuked
    by Paul
