- System events, called contingencies, can occur
and create an abnormal system condition. The
abnormal system condition could be the loss of a
generator, line, or piece of equipment that
creates a change in network flow and can result
in the loss of power and energy to some portion
of the network. - System events can be caused by a number of

15Iowa Ice Storm February 2007
- In late February IPL, Alliant Energys
Iowa/Minnesota utility service territory
experience a significant ice storm. The ice storm
resulted in - 250,000 customers without power out of a customer
base of 500,000 - 2,000 distribution poles down or damaged
- 1600 transmission structures down or damaged
- 1000 miles of transmission conductor on ground
- 103 towns out for greater than 24 hours
