2- GIS is a tool used to assemble, store,
retrieve, manipulate, analyze, and display
information about objects and events on earth. - GIS associates information from different
sources by relating them according to location. - The data from these sources can be grouped
into manageable and meaningful layers that can be
combined to form a single map. - GIS is a tool that gives a further spatial
dimension to analysis and presentations
3Relevance of GIS in the Planning Process
- Planning is an ongoing, non-deterministic
process that deals with numerous variables which
change over time. - Thus the purpose for GIS is to help decision
support and planning support systems. - GIS can be applied to identify problems,
display data and information, manage facilities
and services, monitor daily operations, selection
of locations for plants and services. informed
prediction all of which facilitate and enhance
the planning process - Planning decisions and predictions have to be
informed and based on a plethora of information,
and a set of alternatives which will facilitate
and enhance the planning process
