33"KING LEARDescription of Wood-cut 4 colors 12"
x 18"?by Hannah Tompkins
The 4 colors in this print were used to designate
the 4 stages of life Childhood....
Yellow Youth... .... Ochre Adulthood.... Light
Sienna Old Age...... Dark Brown
34"TROILUS CRESSIDADescription of Wood-cut 3
colors 12" x 18"?by Hannah Tompkins
The two kneeling women framed by tombstone
shapes, (echoing the silhouette of the central
figure), represent all bereaved womankind who
mourn their war dead, laid out in rows, lower
left. The skeletal figure with oversized hands
(symbol of giving) hovers over them like a
haunting memory. The 'Tree of Life' behind
Memory' is also dead and stands in a similar
configuration of crucifixion, minus the hands.
This absence together with the other chopped off
limbs signify loss and deprivation. The stark
contrast of yawning tombs and the endless vacuum
of gray space in the background contribute to
this expression. The suppressed color scheme and
dominant vertical forms establish an emotional
tension.
35"JULIET" (Romeo Juliet)Description of Wood-cut
4 colors 12" x 18"?by Hannah Tompkins
The blue and purple color scheme suggests
celestial purity, incongruously set in an
underground tomb. (Note descending stairway in
right background.)Tybalt's bier stands in the
middle ground, partly hidden by columns. The
columns infer a temple more than a crypt.Juliet
is surrounded by dark spaces and arched windows
and doorways that she will never explore. In the
center purple space can be seen a design of links
with the bottom broken off, like the links of the
heroine's life. The ultimate consummation of this
tragedy would draw tears from stones, and this is
expressed in the tear-drop shapes in the face
stones topping the columns. There is yet a sense
of victory in self-determination and the repeated
strong vertical forms create a feeling of
ascension rather than defeat.
36"HAMLETDescription of Wood-cut 3 colors 10" x
14"?by Hannah Tompkins
King Hamlet, upper left, is shown as the King of
Spades, whose divinatory meanings are significant
in Tarot card symbolism. His lower torso, draped
in a shroud ties into Hamlet's fatal sword
grip.Swords Spades in card suits, representing
leaders and warriors as well as force and
authority in good or evil references sometimes
it denotes misfortune and disaster. "If this card
appears upside down in a Tarot reading the
meaning warns of a dangerous wicked person who
causes unnecessary disturbance and sadness and
who pursues a matter to ruin". The card also
predicts impending disaster, violence,
corruption, moral disorder, slander, malice,
treachery and desertions.These interpretations
sum up the elements of the play and describe King
Hamlet, despite the adjectives of virtue, like
"fair", "noble" and "goodly king", that his son
has ideally bestowed on him.
37"MACBETHDescription of Lino-cut 4 colors 10" x
14"?by Hannah Tompkins
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are shown in a fearful
huddle, plotting the murder of Duncan. To conceal
their guilt of this conspiracy with pretended
innocence, Macbeth advises"False face must hide
what the false heart doth know."So their faces
are partly hidden by masks of deceptive
virtue. After the act, the horror of the violence
has so disordered Macbeth that he utters in
distraction"O, full of scorpions is my mind."And
scorpions are shown, literally, filling the crown
of his head.Power ambition is designated by the
double-headed serpent emerging from beneath a
jeweled crown. Serpents also make up the design
on the brocade sleeve of Lady Macbeth. In her
hand she holds the fatal, bloody dagger.
