The Curious Incident of Learning in the Morning

Step 1
  • Teach some literature circle roles through very
    short Dr. Seuss stories. The other stories of
    The Sneetches and Yertle the Turtle.
  • I plan to teach the Discussion Director, Literary
    Luminator, The Connector, and The Illustrator

Step 2
  • Ill continue to teach the different roles with
    Dr. Seuss. This time, though, I will be reading
    the full version of these texts.

Step 3
  • My students are getting the hang of literature
    circle roles by now and I move to my next set of
    picture books that will teach them some prior
    knowledge about Autism, Ians Walk and Andy and
    his Yellow Frisbee.

  • Now that my students know a little bit about
    Autism, I will have my students read The Curious
    Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime as a whole
    class. As they read, I will be watching to see
    that they know how to manipulate the different
    roles of literature circles.

  • I will divide them into groups of 4. In each
    group, they will be deciding who is going to be
    doing each role. However, this time, they will
    be reading a book on their own in their own
    group. They will be reading Frindle.

  • Now they will be released on their own to pick
    their own books and to pick their own assignment.
    They will also have lots of age-appropriate
    books to choose from. Here are their options.

  • For each book, they will have a short activity
    that goes along with each book. They will do the
    assignment as a group or individually, whichever
    it calls for. They will each have a handout that
    has a summary of all of the books and activities
    that correlate with the book.

  • Moving to the next book. When one group finishes
    with a book, they will be encouraged to move onto
    another. I plan to do literature circles for
    about 3 rounds and then let the students do an
    independent reading activity where they pick the
    next book.
