Introduction to Manufacturing
  • Custom-Fit is a relatively new approach to
manufacturing, which breaks the trend with
    traditional manufacturing methods.
  • Traditional methods of manufacturing focus on
producing large numbers of the same product most
products we buy are mass produced such in
quantities of 100,000s to Millions as the Apple
    iPod.
  • All the iPod's in a given range will be
manufactured to be exactly the same, the consumer
has options such as which colour or capacity the
product is but otherwise products will be
    identical.
  • This is the principle of Mass Production
introduced by Henry Ford in 1913 and very little
    has changed since.

produced car you can have any colour as long as
it is black.

Custom Products
  • So thats mass produced products.
  • Now however we expect to be able to chose the
colour of our phones, iPods and shoes.
  • But many people want to be more
  • individualistic and demonstrate
  • their own style though customising
  • products. This is featured in
  • programs such as Pimp my Ride.
  • But there are other reasons for producing custom
    products such as fit.

5
Why is Custom-Fit Needed?
  • Many products are still made to a standard sizes
which is mostly fine but can cause problems
especially when we need to interact with the
    product a lot.
  • However we are all individuals (picture)
  • Custom-Fit focuses on producing products so that
they are individual to the user.

6
What is Custom-Fitting?
  • Peoples feet arent the same and footballer
players have different length of stride, which
means they run and also kick differently.
  • You an understand why it would be
  • beneficial for top flight football players
  • to have custom-fit boots made just
  • for them.

7
Why Custom-Fit
  • Top footballer players have custom fitting boots
    for a variety of reasons
  • comfort
  • to guard against injury from ill fitting boots
  • to improve their performance.
  • However until recently personalised or bespoke
products had to be made by hand at great expense.
  • Typically the more of a product you make the
cheaper it becomes, hence why Mass production is
    the norm.
  • However new technology and developments have made
    custom-fit more affordable.
