Title: Writing a Friendly Letter

1
Writing a Friendly Letter
  • Take notes on this in your writers notebook on
    the next available page.

2
There are six parts to a letter
  • Heading
  • Salutation
  • Letter Intro, Body, Conclusion
  • Closing
  • Signature
  • PS (postscript)

3
Heading
  • Check to make sure you have the correct
information on the correct line. It should be on
the right side of the paper. See below.
  • first line - street number and street namesecond
line - town or city, state and ZIP code third
    line - the date

4
Salutation
  • a 10 word for greeting
  • Dear So-and-so, (remember your comma!)
  • Appears on the left hand side of the page below
    the heading
  • Ex Dear Aunt Tricia,

5
Introduction
  • Intended to get the person to continue reading
and give idea as to why you're writing.
  • Start out talking about the person to whom you're
sending the letter (it's polite). Then give
information about you and why you're writing.
  • This can all go in one paragraph, or, if it's too
long and doesn't "go" in one paragraph, make the
    decision to separate it.

6
Body
  • This is the main part of the letter. It gets to
the point of why you're writing. Change
paragraphs and indent each time you change the
topic you're talking about. This is the longest
    part of the letter.

7
Conclusion
  • Wrap it all up. Be clever

8
Closing
  • Choose an appropriate closing, and sign your
name. Make sure this lines up with the heading.
Only the first word is capitalized.

9
Signature
  • This is important because it identifies the
    letter writer.
  • If you are sure the person will know who you are,
only your first name is needed.

10
P.S. Postscript
  • This is used when you are finished writing your
letter and want to add something else.
  • Latin and mean after writing.
  • It is a brief addition to the body and appears
    below the signature.

11
MOST IMPORTANT
  • When you are finished, make sure you re-read your
    letter.

12
Do these parts of a letter apply to an email?
  • What are your thoughts on this? Discuss with a
    partner.
