Background
  • Iron is required for a number of vital functions
    in all spheres of life.
  • Iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutritional
    disorder worldwide, especially in developing
    countries (Sante, 2002).
  • Approximately 2b people worldwide suffer from
    anemia, mostly due to iron deficiency (ICN),
    Rome, 1992).

  • Young children and women of reproductive age are
    mostly affected by iron deficiency (Yip and
    Ramakrishna, 2002).
  • The main cause of iron deficiency in developing
    countries is the low iron bioavailability from
    diet (Sante, 2002).

  • IDA may have adverse effects on cognitive
    development and work capacity (Walter T, 2003
    Horton S, 2001).
  • Severe anemia is associated with increased
    malnutrition, morbidity and mortality.

Objective of the study
  • to find out the Iron intake level from dietary
    source in 2 to 4 years children of lower SES in
    Urban slums of Dhaka city, Bangladesh.

Methodology
  • Study Design
  • Cross-sectional descriptive randomized study.
  • Study population
  • Forty six children of both sex aged 24 to 48
    months.
  • Study site
  • Selected urban slums of Dhaka city, Bangladesh

  • Data Collection
  • The information (Socioeconomic status, family
    size, and nutritional practices, past health
    history, illness of the last month) was collected
    by pre-structured questionnaire from the mother
    or the care giver.
  • Anthropometry
  • Weight was determined using weighing scale
    (sensitivity 100g), height was measured by height
    scale with precision of 2 mm, and MUAC was
    measured using TALC tape with precision of 2 mm.

  • 24 hour dietary recall method
  • In this study the information of food intake of
    2-4 years old children was collected by 24 hours
    dietary recall method.
  • The respondent was asked to remember and report
    all foods and beverages consumed in the preceding
    day.
  • The iron intake was calculated using a standard
    reference (Gopalan C, 1991).

  • Data Analysis
  • Data was analyzed using SPSS version 11.5.
    Nutritional status was calculated by using WHO
    Anthro software.
  • Descriptive statistics were done for variables of
    interest.

Conclusion
  • Iron intake level is less than 5 mg/day in 70 of
    2 to 4 years children of lower socio-economic
    status (SES).

Recommendation
  • As the 2 to 4 years children belong to a
    vulnerable group, they should be given sufficient
    micronutrient containing diets required for their
    growth and developments.
