• Between mid-1960s and mid-1990s, global per
  capita daily calorie consumption increased by
  about 10
• US in 1990 had the highest calorie consumption of
  3,671 per capita per day. Caloric consumption in
  the poorest countries of the world ranged between
  1,700-2,600
• Calorie consumption below 1,700 cause
  mal-nourishment
• On global basis, the population estimated to be
  malnourished decreased from 900 million to 800
  million
• An increase in the global population from 6
  billion to 10 billion means that we will need to
  increase global food supplies by a factor of 1.67
  just to maintain current dietary levels.

Causes of Famine

• Soil degradation
• Political failures ( ex. War, protests, riots,
  coups etc.)
• Failure in long-term agricultural production to
  match population growth
• Over fishing
