Title: Heart, blood, blood vessels

1
Cardiovascular System
  • Heart, blood, blood vessels

2
What are its components?
  • Heart muscular organ
  • Blood vessels tubes that blood travels through
  • Blood
  • See the systems at work http//www.smm.org/heart/
    heart/circ.htm

3
Types of Circulation
  • Pulmonary - flow of blood
  • Systemic flow of blood

4
Heart Structure http//www.smm.org/heart/hea
rt/in-out.htm
  • Left side pumps oxygen poor blood to lungs
  • Right side pumps oxygen rich blood to the body
  • Upper chambers atria
  • Lower chambers ventricles
  • Valves prevent backflow of blood
  • Valve Interactive http//www.smm.org/heart/heart/
    pumping.htm

5
Heart Structure
  • Oxygen-poor blood (shown in blue) flows from the
body into the right atrium. Blood flows
through the right atrium into the right
ventricle. The right ventricle pumps the blood
to the lungs, where the blood releases waste
gases and picks up oxygen. The newly
oxygen-rich blood (shown in red) returns to the
heart and enters the left atrium. Blood flows
through the left atrium into the left
ventricle. The left ventricle pumps the
oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body.

6
What is the function of the Heart?
  • To pump blood
  • The heart at work
  • http//www.smm.org/heart/heart/pumping.htm
  • http//www.nucleusinc.com/animation2.php

7
Function of Blood Vessels
  • All carry blood
  • Arteries carries oxygen-rich blood away from the
    heart to your body?
  • Veins return oxygen-poor blood to your heart.
  • Capillaries
  • Connect arteries to veins
  • tiniest blood vessels
  • carry blood to and from every cell in your body
  • Capillary walls are so thin that oxygen ,
nutrients and waste can pass right through them
(in out of the body's cells)

8
BLOOD
9
Blood is a tissue
  • Plasma is the fluid. Regulates temperature,
contains platelets, red and white blood cells
  • Red blood cells contains hemoglobin (oxygen
    carrying protein), carries oxygen, nutrient,
    waste
  • White blood cells fight disease (pathogens)
  • Platelets are cell fragments, reduce blood loss
    by making blood clot

10
Blood Pressure
  • Force of blood when the heart beats
  • tells your doctor how hard your heart is working
to push blood through your arteries
  • Interactive http//www.victoriacollege.edu/dept/b
    io/Animations/iworx/blood_pressure.html
  • Systolic The bigger number (the number on top)
shows the pressure when your heart contracts, or
    beats.
  • Diastolic The smaller number (the number on the
bottom) shows the pressure when your heart
    relaxes between beats

11
Blood Types
  • There are different blood types
  • A
  • B
  • AB
  • O
  • Each type can receive from certain other types.
(well find out in our lab tomorrow)
  • Which type can donate to which?

12
Respiration
  • How does the Oxygen get into the blood?
  • What is respiration?
  • Cardiovascular and respiratory Systems working
    together
  • Breathing and the exchange of oxygen carbon
    dioxide
  • Exchange between the alveoli and capillaries

13
Cardiovascular Problems
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Atherosclerosis
