Title: Implementation of a Standard Treatment Protocol Response to Intervention

1
Implementation of a Standard Treatment Protocol
Response to Intervention
  • William Bender and Cara Shores

Sharon Bartels-Wheeless Minot State University
2
Discrepancy Model vs. RTI
  • Discrepancy Model
  • - dependent on a students performance on
    one-time assessments
  • RTI
  • - standard treatment RTI protocol involves
exposing a student to educational interventions
and monitoring progress repeatedly to see the
    response.
  • - this involves rigorous progress monitoring,
    data collection, and analysis.

3
RTI Pyamid
  • 3 Tier Approach to problem solving
  • Tier 1 primary
  • focused populationwide
  • Tier 2 secondary
  • more intensive smaller group work
  • Tier 3 tertiary
  • individually focused

4
Tier 1 Guidelines
  • Teacher suspects problem, obtains scores on
    general screening measures (CBMs)
  • If screening is in bottom 20-25 a tier 1
    intervention must be initiated
  • Tier 1 interventions implemented in the reg.ed.
    classroom by reg.ed. teacher
  • Teacher observed and notes taken during
    instructional lessons
  • Collect a minimum of 6 data points or 6
    assessments of academic progress, assessments
should be given at least once a week

5
Tier 2 Guidelines
  • Select intensive curriculum to address specific
    problem
  • Parental notice of intervention outside of
    reg.ed. class
  • Small group interventions, each day
  • Teacher observed during implementation, notes
    taken
  • Collect a minimum of 20 data points or 20
assessments of academic progress, assessments at
    least twice weekly

6
Tier 3 Guidelines
  • Summary report
  • Team meet and complete eligibility evaluation

7
The Standard Protocol RTI Package
  • A screening score indicating a potential problem
  • A Tier 1 intervention data set indicating less
    then adequate or non-response
  • Observational notes indicating reg.ed. teacher
    implemented scientifically based curriculum with
    fidelity
  • A Tier 2 intervention data set indicating less
    then adequate or non-response
  • Observational data indicating an intensive
    research-based intervention was undertaken and
  • A summary report of these elements and
recommendations for further services for LD.
