Welcome to
BASF Antwerp

Foreword
  • Your and our safety are very important. That is
why a chemical company has procedures you need to
know. This presentation discusses the most
    important regulations.
  • Also, always request your superior, experienced
colleagues or client for detailed information.
There is no such thing as a silly question!
  • Working safely demands that you recognise the
dangers and safeguard yourself and your
    colleagues.
  • In any case we hope you have a safe and
    successful stay in our company!

W. De Geest Managing Director

  • All accidents can be avoided! This is possible
    through a far-reaching prevention policy and a
safety culture that is respected by EVERYONE.
  • Everyone is responsible for their own safety and
    that of their colleagues.
  • Anyone who works for us needs to work safely and
will be assessed on this as well as appreciated
    for it.
  • We are entitled to monitor any activities,
prohibit the use of unsafe equipment, tools
and/or work methods and to stop the work.
  • This applies to everyone!

    products.
  • Hazardous products are indicated with symbols.

Presence of hazardous products and protection
  • Special personal protective equipment needs to be
    worn AT ALL TIMES
  • when you work with hazardous products.
  • when you work in or at a production installation.

Hazardous products fire, explosion and
environmental danger

Use of emergency and eye showers
  • With EVERY contact of the product with skin or
eyes the emergency or eye shower needs to be
    used.
  • Before starting work find out where the closest
emergency and eye shower is located.
  • Emergency and eye showers have been indicated
    with the following pictograms

the BASF medical facilities (building B 520).
  • An injury can have serious consequences!
  • The medical facilities are manned every day,
    24/7.
  • In case of an accident call 777 (internal

5. ACCESS REGISTER TRAFFIC
22
Register in the companies
  • If you pass the access test, you will receive a
PERSONAL badge that you must carry on your person
    at all times.
  • Anyone entering a production installation,
building or workshop needs to register via an
    M-reader.
  • Hold your badge in front of IN to badge in
  • Hold your badge in front of UIT to badge out
  • Don't forget to badge out when leaving
  • the production installation, building or
  • workshop!

23
Traffic guidlines
  • The train, the intervention service and the
ambulance always have right of way. Pay attention
    at unguarded level crossings!
  • Max. 30 km / hour
  • Seatbelts are compulsory in vehicles
  • Only HANDS-FREE use of GSM
  • Do not park in front of fire hydrants,
  • under pipe bridges and near the track!

Traffic Rules - cyclists
  • It is MANDATORY for all cyclists to wear a
fluorescent vest on the BASF site !
  • For pedestrians it is recommended to wear
    a
    fluorescent vest !
  • Exception
  • Not mandatory in case of commuter traffic

to and from the gate, but then

    a bicycle light is
    mandatory !

25
6. PERMITS
26
Permits
  • A permit can only be obtained by people with
    special training.
  • Every permit needs to be on-site with the person
    executing the works.
  • The permits need to be shown at the simple
    request of a BASF employee.
  • We will discuss the different permits

27
A-permit (work permit)
  • The A-permit is necessary for any work carried
    out on the site!

28
A-permit (work permit)
  • The measures you need to take on top of the
standard measures are indicated on the permit.
  • The regulations on the permits need to be
    explained by your superior.
  • The permit needs to be signed overleaf by any
person working on the site by way of acceptance
    of the regulations.

29
B-permit (access permit)
  • A B-permit allows you to access tanks, columns or
    other enclosed spaces.
  • The measures you need to take on top of the
standard measures are indicated on the permit.
  • A safety supervisor needs to be present at all
    times.
  • UNDER NO CONDITION may these areas be entered,
not even briefly or partly, without a B-permit!

30
V-permit (fire permit)
  • The A-permit combined with a V-permit allows you
to make fire or sparks but not to smoke!
  • Within a safety zone (Ex-zone), marked with
red-white poles and chains there is a high fire-
and explosion hazard. To use non-explosion safe
devices in this zone a V-permit is required (e.g.
    for vehicles).

31
V-permit for welding and grinding work
  • A fire extinguisher needs to be on hand in case
    of welding and grinding work.
  • Welding equipment needs to be certified by BASF
    (see label)!

32
G-permit
  • A G-permit is necessary for all underground
    activities!

33
7. INSTALLATIONS - MACHINES
34
Electrical machines and cables
  • Machines with damaged cables constitute a major
electrocution hazard and may never be used.
Electrical machines and cables need to be in
    perfect condition.
  • Keep cables away from passages and stairs as much
as possible. Preferably use S-hooks to hang up
    cables.

35
Demarcations
  • If you carry out work that is hazardous for
    others (e.g. assembly work, sandblasting,
hoisting), the risk area needs to be demarcated
    (e.g. with signalisation ribbon).
  • Newly-built platforms, holes, need to have a
solid barrier (in wood or metal).

36
Scaffolding
  • Scaffolding may only be used when a valid
    S-permit is present.
  • No changes (not even temporarily moving a plank)
are allowed to be made by unauthorised people.
  • Order and cleanliness, also on scaffolding!

37
Fall protection
  • In case of activities at height, fall protection
    is necessary.
  • Collective personal protective equipment is
preferred. If this is not possible fall
protection harnass needs to be worn.
  • Wearing and securing fall protection is
    compulsory in a cherry picker.

38
Order and cleanliness
  • After the work the work site needs to be cleaned
up always and everywhere! This is the sign of a
    real professional.

39

Reporting an accident
  • In case of
  • an accident,
  • a gas leak,

flash bulb on top of the IN-reader is on.
  • Go immediately to the A-reader of the indicated
    meeting point.

44

  • Siren
  • All permits fall due at the end of the alarm
and need to be issued again.
  • At the end of the alarm after evacuation you need
to re-register (badge) at the plant that you
    left.
  • Test alarm every 1st Thursday of the month at
12.00. This test alarm starts with an end of
alarm. Do not react to these alarms.

45
