Swamps
  • Completely or partially wooded with trees and
    shrubs.
  • Soil is black muck in standing water
  • 1-1 or more deep
  • Slow moving or still water, muddy, not very deep
  • Fill up with decaying plants

Types of Swamps
  • Cypress swamps- found in the south
  • Shrub swamps- forested regions
  • Red Maple swamps- found in north
  • Southern Bottomland Hardwood swamps- are river
    swamps

Marshes
  • Full of reeds, rushes and cattails
  • Generally treeless and open
  • Found along streams, borders or lakes, ponds and
    rivers
  • Examples are the Florida Everglades
  • Marshes form once trees grow in swamps
  • Salt marshes are found near oceans and they help
    reduce erosion of shores, oceans, and bays

  • Occur on permanently flooded or periodically
    flooded land
  • Waterlogged conditions develop special soils
  • Wetlands are impermanent

Animals
  • There are a lot of different types of reptiles
    and amphibian species in the wetlands
  • Waterfowls and shorebirds nest around or in
    wetlands during migration
  • Wetlands also have endangered species that
    inhabit them

Conservation Efforts
  • CERP- Comprehensive, Everglades Restoration, Plan
  • U.S. Army corps of engineers is partnering with
    South Florida water management district have
    developed plan to save everglades
  • WRDA- water resources development act, will make
    improvements and modification to restore
    ecosystems
