    Charlemagnes death in 814.
  • Divided among his grandsons into east Frankish
    lands, West Frankish lands, Middle Kingdom.
  • Invasions lead to demise of old Carolingian
    world.

  • Muslims attacked southern coast.
  • Magyars, a people from southern Asia moved into
    central Europe.
  • Vikings of Scandinavia were the most far reaching
    of attackers.

  • Great ship builders
  • Ships held about 50 men.
  • Could float in shallow water.
  • Allowed them to move up rivers and attack inland.

  • Women were not allowed to own property.
  • Often women could control the actions of the men.
  • Women were responsible for running the household
    while the men were off fighting.
