  • ? ? ?
  • What is a quote?
  • ?

3
A quotation is when you integrate someone
elses direct words into your own writing.
  • According to Mike Hoffman, the local
meteorologist, It will be a blizzard.

4
Why should I quote someone else if its my paper?
  • As Ralph Waldo Emerson reflected, one rarely
writes about ideas that no one has ever explored.
it makes sense to build on that persons
    discoveries (qtd. In Spatt 65).

5
When should I use a quotation?
  • For strong support of your ideas
  • When the language of the original source is
    extremely powerful
  • When the language of the original cannot be
stated any more clearly or concisely from the
    original source
  • To analyze some one elses specific words
  • To demonstrate that when you use certain words,
they are not necessarily your own words

6
WARNING
  • It is best to quote sparinglyotherwise it will
seem that you have little to say for yourself!
  • Never quote back to back
  • Quotations over four lines are treated differently

7
Whats a quote? DROPPED
8
Dropped quotations
  • A dropped quotation looks like
  • It would seem there will be a massive
    snowstorm.
  • Who said this? Can we trust this?
  • Dropped quotations add little support to arguments

9
Integrated quotations
  • Integrated quotations let your audience know
where your quotation is coming from and who said
    it
  • According to Mike Hoffman on WNDU news, there
will be a massive snowstorm. Because of his
warning, we were able to stock up at the store
before we got snowed into the house.
  • A fully integrated quotation is introduced
and then the writer will make a comment upon the
quotation before moving on. Why was this quote
important? What does it mean for your writing?

10
Accuracy Counts!
  • Be sure to use the sources exact words when you
quotedouble check either reread the sentence
you are quoting or repeat it to the person you
    are quoting.

11
The MLA
  • Whenever you quote, paraphrase or summarize, you
should be following the MLA guidelines of
    citation. If you don
