2
Characteristics of Solids
Particles are close together
Solids stay put until someone moves them
Molecules dont move unless I brake or crack them
Some have elasticity or can stretch like rubber
bands
Some have plasticity - can change shape like clay

Most cannot change shape easily

poured).
Liquids take the shape of their containers.
Molecules will slip, slide, or move over or

Charactericistics of Gases
Gas molecules or particles are quite far apart.
Gas molecules spread out and float in different
directions.
Gas will spread out in all directions (will not
pour).
This form of matter will fill the whole
container.
In most cases, gas is invisible to the necked eye

Prepared and Produced by third and fourth
graders in a combination class at Banoak
Elementary School in Catawba County, North
Carolina.
The class was divided into three groups with a
leader in each. The groups brainstormed objects
to draw in the Paint Program on the
computer. Each group then combined their drawings
and developed a collage for their illustrations
