Mary
Lecture 9 Holy Spirit Marys role in
Salvation Four Dogmas
2
Typology
  • Where is Mary in Scripture?
  • Unity of Scripture
  • We must remember that the Bible is not just the
    New Testament.
  • The Bible must be read in its whole the NT and
    the OT.
  • The New Testament is hidden in the Old, the the
Old Testament is revealed in the New.
  • Prooftexting?
  • Catholics dont simply find support for her
Marian beliefs by finding isolated passages that
seem to support the Church doctrines.

3
Typology
  • Definition
  • The interpretive principle by which the Church
reads the New Testament in light of the Old
    Testament.
  • Type
  • Anything in the Old Testament that points to the
coming of Christ and His work in our redemption.
  • People, places, or events in the OT that
prefigure, foreshadow, or prepare Gods people
for salvation through the son of God.
  • Scriptural roots
  • Heb 85 The Jerusalem priests serve as a
copy and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary.
  • Rom 514 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses,
even over those whose sins were not like the
transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one
    who was to come.

4
Typology
  • Jesus use of typology
  • Mt 126 Jesus explains that he is greater than
    the Temple.
  • Mt 1241 Jesus compares himself to Jonah.
Jonah was saved from the belly of the whale after
3 days Christ will rise from the dead after 3
    days.
  • Mt 1242 Jesus is greater than Solomon.
Solomon built the temple on the foundation stone
Christ built the Church on Peter, the Rock.

5
Marian Typology
  • From the very beginning of Scripture we see the
    man and the woman.
  • Old Testament
  • Adam and Eve
  • Moses and the Ark
  • David and his Queen Mother
  • New Testament
  • New Adam and New Eve
  • New Moses and the New Ark
  • Christ, the true Son of David and Mary, the true
    Queen Mother
  • Eve and Mary
  • Eve A virgin and undefiled, having conceived
the word of the serpent, brought disobedience and
    death into the world.
  • Mary A virgin and undefiled, received and
conceived the word of the Angel Gabriel, gave
birth to the Son of God, thus obedience and life
    entered the world.

6
Objection
  • Why do I have to go to Mary when I can go
    directly to Jesus?
  • Fact of the matter
  • Jesus does not come directly to us.
  • Jesus comes to us thru the Holy Spirit.
  • We do not go directly to Jesus.
  • We go to Jesus thru the Holy Spirit.
  • Holy Spirit
  • Enables us to
  • Be united with Jesus believe in Jesus be united
    with the Father.
  • Scripture
  • Rom 89-12
