Second Grade A-Z
  • Parent Orientation

A
  • Accelerated Reader A major component of the
    Language Arts program this year. Students will
    spend 30 minutes of class time each day reading
    books on their independent reading levels and
    taking comprehension tests on the computer. At
    the end of the nine weeks, one grade for
    participation and two grades for comprehension
    will be included in the reading average.
  • Agenda Each student is given a weekly agenda
    with homework assignments, behavior, and test
    schedules. Students also keep track of their
    money earned towards the behavior party here.
  • Art Students attend art on Tuesdays.
  • Absences All absences must be excused in order
    to receive missed assignments. A note from the
    parent or doctor is required upon return to
    school. The office will be notified once five
    absences have accrued during a semester. If a
    student leaves early, the absence is
    automatically excused the following day.

  • Birthdays feel free to send a special treat to
    celebrate your childs birthday.
  • Behavior Note If your child pulls all his/her
    cards, he/she will bring home a behavior note to
    be signed and returned.
  • Book Clubs occasionally we will send home book
    order forms from Scholastic, Carnival, etc. If
    you are interested in ordering books for your
    child, please make the check payable directly to
    the book club or send cash.

  • Computer Lab The wireless lab is in our
    classroom for 30 minutes each Monday and we go to
    the computer lab for 30 minutes on Thursday.
    Students will be working with several programs
    including A Learning Systems and AR. They will
    also be using the internet to research specific
    topics and play educational games.
  • Conferences Will be scheduled during our
    planning time or after school. If you would like
    to request a conference, please send a note or
    e-mail me.
  • Curriculum can be accessed at the Georgia
    Learning Connections website http//www.glc.k12.g
    a.us/. Choose the subject area and the grade
    level that you are interested in.

  • Discipline A copy of my discipline plan is
    provided in the STAR book.

  • Electronics games and devices will be permitted
    only on special occasions or as rewards for
    classroom behavior or meeting AR goals.
  • E-mail the best way to contact me during the

  • English (Language) is a major component of the
    Language Arts program. It counts for 20 of the
    Language Arts grade.

  • Field trips We will be proposing several field
    trips for this school year. Please consider
    helping us out by volunteering to chaperone these
    events.
  • Forgery is something that happens from time to
    time. Please discuss the consequences of forgery
    with your child. This will be an automatic
    office referral.

  • Guided Reading Basal Book, First day of story
    students given a cold test. New vocabulary from
    story. Graphic Organizers.Last day of story,
    students are given a comprehension test. 70 of
    Language Arts grade.
  • Guidance will be offered during specials each
    week. Julie Fullbright and Barbara Gertler are
    our counselors and are available for group or
    individual counseling as well.
  • Graphic Organizers are teaching aids designed
    to help students learn and retain information.
    Your child will have graphic organizers in
    content areas. Please review them on a daily
    basis.

  • Homework assignments are included in the weekly
    agenda. Students are required to complete
    homework assignments on time. Incomplete homework
    will be completed during extra time in the school
    day or at recess.

  • Internet Students will be allowed to visit ONLY
    approved sites. All students must have the
    network permission form signed before they will
    be permitted to use the internet.
  • Invitations Please do not send invitations to
    birthday parties to school to be distributed
    unless all class members are invited to the
    party. This causes hurt feelings and interrupts
    instructional flow.

  • Knowledge is what I will offer your children
    this year. I hope you will be pleased with their
    growth.

  • Lunch is daily

  • Math Many students have mastered basic math
    facts, while others still struggle. The only way
    to master these facts is by practicing them on a
    regular basis. Please help me by drilling facts
    with flashcards until your child has mastered
    them.
  • Mountain Math Daily activity to develop and
    review math skills.
  • Media Center Students will have access to the
    media center on an as needed basis. When they
    have finished reading a book and have taken the
    AR test, they may go to the media center and
    check out another.
  • Music is offered to the students twice a week.
    Danielle Callan is the music teacher.

  • Newsletter Please check out our website for the
    newsletter. We will include important dates and
    activities.

  • Outside recess Students should have proper
    outerwear for cool weather. If the heat index
    permits, we will have outside recess on most days
    from 255-315.

  • P.E. Students will have PE daily for thirty
    minutes
  • Positive Rewards Good Behavior Parties. Clean
    desk treats. RR top ten.

  • Quiet Hallways are a must!!
  • Questions are invited and encouraged, by
    students and parents.

  • Reading Renaissance is a major component of the
    Reading Program. Reading Renaissance is the
    implementation of the Accelerated Reader Program.
    Each student will keep a reading log and record
    dates, books, and pages read daily
  • Report Cards will be sent home on the following
    dates October 13, January 8, March 16, and May
    23.
  • Responsibility Please help us prepare your
    child for the real world by letting them assume
    responsibility for their work. Monitor them,
    please, but do not do the work for them.
  • Restrooms Students may use the restroom as
    needed throughout the day. I only ask that
    students not leave during an oral test or
    interrupt instruction by asking.

  • Saxon Phonics Rules/coding, completed in class.
  • Star Book Lunch money, STAR letter,
    rules/consequences, Agenda folder(green), Reading
    Renaissnace folder(red), important papers
    folder(yellow), graphic organizers(blue), parent
    communication, word wall.
  • Science Please review your childs vocabulary,
    reading guides, and graphic organizers on a daily
    basis.
  • Social Studies Please check your childs
    agenda for test announcements.
  • Stapled Papers will be sent home every Monday
    or Tuesday. Please review the papers, sign the
    top sheet, and return the entire packet by
    Friday.
  • Spelling Spelling words will be included in the
    agendas on Mondays. Spelling tests will be given
    on Fridays. 10of Language Arts grade.
  • Standarized Testing CRCT
  • Snack 1235 daily.

  • TOPS reports are printed out each time your
    child takes an Accelerated Reader test. Praise
    and encourage your child to help develop a love
    for reading!!

  • Volunteers are needed to help on days of class
    celebrations

  • Water Students may bring a water bottle with a
    pop-up spout to school with them daily. The
    brain needs constant hydration for optimal
    performance.
  • While You Were Out is a sheet that your child
    will receive when he/she is absent. The
    assignments that they missed will be listed.
  • Written Excuse is to be brought to the teacher
    following and absence.

  • X-tra credit Extra credit assignments are not
    given. I feel that I give enough regular work.

  • You can do it! When students say they cant do
    it, I tell them yes you can!

  • Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is the
    reading range as identified by STAR test and
    assigned to each student for Reading Renaissance.
