  • Manco Capac-first Inca ruler
  • Inca settled and built the capital city Cuzco
  • At first they were not very powerful
  • Had to fight against locals
  • They also built alliances with locals

  • Inca Viracocha-eighth Inca ruler
  • People believe he fled the Cuzco because he
    feared defeat by Chancas
  • Paracuti-Viracochas son-stayed to fight.
  • The legends says that he shouted to the stones
    for help and they rose up and turned into
    soldiers to help.

    people move.
  • His power increased and his army grew
  • He became a great builder
  • Many buildings were built in the capital city,
    Cuzco
  • Turned control over to his son-Topa Inca
  • He nearly doubled the size of the empire

  • when the Incas conquered new people they let
    their old rulers stay in control of their people
    but they had to remain loyal to the Inca
  • They also paid taxes, built roads, and required
    to join the army.

  • Quipu-system used to keep track of things
  • Rope with various lengths and colors of cords
  • Cords were knotted together
  • Length, color, and knots stood for distances,
    directions, numbers, and objects.
  • Archaeologists use these to learn about the
    culture.

  • They were mostly foot paths b/c they didnt use
    anything with wheels
  • Some were paved for the whole army to walk on
  • Built across all landscapes

  • Bridges were considered sacred

  • helped defeat the Incas in their Civil war

  • They had no leadership and fell apart.
