• Inca was the name of the emperor
• Machu Picchu-site where archeologists have found
  Inca artifacts
• Temples and mummies were found
• It is believed that Machu Picchu was a religious
  center

• Manco Capac-first Inca ruler
• Inca settled and built the capital city Cuzco
• At first they were not very powerful
• Had to fight against locals
• They also built alliances with locals

• An Empire is Born
• Inca Viracocha-eighth Inca ruler
• People believe he fled the Cuzco because he
  feared defeat by Chancas
• Paracuti-Viracochas son-stayed to fight.
• The legends says that he shouted to the stones
  for help and they rose up and turned into
  soldiers to help.

• Pachacuti- became emperor
• He took over a lot of land and made non-Inca
  people move.
• His power increased and his army grew
• He became a great builder
• Many buildings were built in the capital city,
  Cuzco
• Turned control over to his son-Topa Inca
• He nearly doubled the size of the empire

• Efficient Government Gave Inca Strength
• when the Incas conquered new people they let
  their old rulers stay in control of their people
  but they had to remain loyal to the Inca
• They also paid taxes, built roads, and required
  to join the army.
• Chain of Command

• Governors

• There was no written language
• Quipu-system used to keep track of things
• Rope with various lengths and colors of cords
• Cords were knotted together
• Length, color, and knots stood for distances,
  directions, numbers, and objects.
• Archaeologists use these to learn about the
  culture.

• Built more than 14, 000 miles of roads
• They were mostly foot paths b/c they didnt use
  anything with wheels
• Some were paved for the whole army to walk on
• Built across all landscapes
• For military only
• Bridges were considered sacred
• Some still exists today.

• Did not last very long
• The ruins are still magnificent today
• Civil war broke out over two that wanted to be
  emperor
• Francisco Pizarro-
• Spanish explorer
• helped defeat the Incas in their Civil war
• The Inca emperor was executed
• They had no leadership and fell apart.
