2Who is PRINTSouth...
PRINTSouth manufactures printed business
communications products for distributors within
the printing trade.
We were founded in 1993.
The corporate office is located in Atlanta,
Georgia. We have 2 manufacturing facilities and
several warehouse and distribution centers
located in the Mid Atlantic and Southeastern
parts of the United States.
Our aim is to satisfy end-users by delivering a
superior level of service and quality products at
competitive prices.
3A few Good Customers...
4What is a Jumbo Roll?
A jumbo roll is a continuous form delivered on
40 or 50 diameter rolls as opposed to the
conventional method of fan-folding them and
shipping in carton-pack.
5What is the benefit of using jumbo rolls?
There are many. Primarily, one jumbo roll is the
equivalent of over 20 cartons of 11 forms on 24
laser MOCR. This number could jump to an
equivalence of over 30 cartons, depending on the
form size and paper weight. Think about that, in
an environment where as many as eight or ten of
these high-speed production model laser printers
are being used, the increased output alone would
be worth the investment. Couple that with a
possible reduction in support staff and less
material sent to land fills and you have a
win-win situation.
6Jumbo rolls start out as any other printed
business communications product. That is, blank
40 or 50 diameter rolls, produced by paper
mills in varying widths and sent to a forms
manufacturer to be printed.
Simply stated, a jumbo roll form is manufactured
utilizing the same basic techniques as a
continuous fan-fold form. But thats where the
similarities end. Instead of folding the product
and packaging in cartons, it is rewound at the
end of a press, in diameters up to 50, strapped
to a pallet and shipped to the end user.
7Jumbo roll products are printed on web presses
with the ability to print and rewind up to 50
diameter rolls. In order to produce a dependable
product, several issues come to the forefront.
Having a roll wound with the proper tension so as
to prevent telescoping is a basic requirement.
Other considerations include methods of
monitoring the printed image to insure accurate
registration and consistent ink coverage. After
all, when the press is running at speeds in
excess of one 1,000 feet per minute, it is
difficult, if not
impossible, to view the printing with the naked
eye. Monitoring the quality is accomplished
through the use of web cameras timed to the speed
of the press enabling the press operator to view
any area as though it were static.
8In the event of a problem during the run, the
affected area of the roll is marked and later
removed in a piece of equipment called a Roll
Doctor. The two ends are then spliced using
the overlap method.
This results in all forms being usable in laser
printers without waste. An added benefit is the
end user is not paying for freight on unusable
product.
9Take a closer look at our splice...

splice.
Notice the printing continues uninterrupted.
This allows your end-user trouble-free operation
on their laser printers. No need to watch for
mid-roll flags.
10Good Housekeeping,
We dont ship our Dust!
At PRINTSouth, we know the importance of
cleanliness.
Rolls from the paper mills contain dust particles
created by cutting the paper to the proper width.
We vacuum the web on both sides, removing the
dust, as the paper enters our presses. We print
the customers copy, followed immediately by
perforating and punching, which creates dust.
We again vacuum the web just before rewinding the
paper back into the roll.
We dont
ship dust.
11Keep it Clean...
Printer damage can occur when exposed to paper
dust. This is a cumulative issue and may only
show up over time. We want to present a product
we are proud to offer. Thats the reason we wrap
our rolls in kraft paper. This is a detail
which does not go unnoticed.
12After production, the printed rolls are then
loaded two or more onto each pallet with a
moisture barrier between the pallet and the rolls
to prevent the paper from absorbing moisture from
the wood. The rolls, weighing as much as 1,000
pounds
each, are secured to the pallets, using
high-strength banding material. This prevents
the rolls, which are standing up, (in roll
position) from becoming loose and shifting during
transit and storage or, even worse, causing
serious injuries during use. The best jumbo
roll is of no value if its damaged during
shipment or warehousing.
13Quality Control...
The pressman, supervisor, and the Quality Control
department, together make sure the customer is
supplied with a quality product.
QC personnel monitor the job from production make
ready to shipping. These sheets are used for
this process and are turned in daily to the QC
Manager.
14Several advantages of using jumbo roll products
were mentioned before. The main disadvantage is
the fact a partial shipment becomes a bit more
complex than shipping a few cartons next day air.
Therefore maintaining a close watch on inventory
levels becomes critical.
- The primary users of
- jumbo rolls include
- Financial institutions
- Insurance companies
- Utility providers
- Letter shops involved in the
- direct mail industry
- Letter shops apply the variable
- data to a pre-printed direct mail
- piece, such as credit card
- solicitation mailings or a magazine
- subscription renewal notice.
15Jumbo rolls have become more widely used in the
past six to eight years. Their use has seen more
growth as a result of closely targeted direct
mail applications.
These types of applications for the most part,
involve the use of multiple or process color
printing, heavy ink coverage, and UV curing units
on the presses. If the image isnt properly
cured,
heavy ink coverage can offset onto fuser rollers
causing cumulative and costly damage to the
variable imaging equipment.
16While most high-speed laser printers require
pin-feed holes, some of the newer ones do not.
This also allows the end user to feed unprocessed
rolls (no printing, no perfs, no punching)
through their printers thereby reducing the cost
of materials as well as the esthetic quality of
the finished product.
Custom printed jumbo rolls can also be produced
with or without pin-feed holes to suit these
printer requirements.
The profitability of jumbo rolls is in direct
proportion to the value added to the finished
product. That is no different, than say, a
conventional continuous form, in a carton. If it
is complicated, expect to earn more due to the
downside risks. If its not, expect the profit
margins to be more conservative.
17The key to selling more jumbo rolls is through
testimonials. No one makes a better jumbo roll
than PRINTSouth Corp. No one! But dont
take our word for it, call our customers. Well
give you their names and phone numbers.
Many continuous forms manufacturers have tried to
include this seemingly simple process in their
repartee only to discover the pitfalls can be
quite costly. Jumbo rolls can involve jumbo
problems. PRINTSouth invites you and your
customers to tour our facility and web-site
(www.printsouth.com) to learn more.
