2The Legionaries of ChristHistory
- Founded in 1941 in Mexico City, with 12 members.
- Today, there are over 600 priests, and 2500
seminarians preparing for the priesthood, active
in 22 countries around the world. - Legionaries spend 12-14 years of preparation for
the priesthood, in different parts of world.
3The Legionaries of Christin the US
- Legionaries opened their first house in the US in
1965 in Woodmont, CT. - Today, Legionaries are active in over 75 cities
across the US and Canada.
4The Legionaries of Christand Education
- The first Legionary K-12 school was launched in
1954. - The first K-12 school in the US opened in the
late 80s. - Today, there are over 120 Legionary K-12 schools
worldwide, 19 of those in US.

6Legions History in Higher Education
- The Legion launched its first university (the
Anahuac University) in 1964 with 48 students in
Mexico City. - Today, there are 11 Higher Education institutions
around the world with a total enrollment over
20,000. - The Legion launched a Pontifical University in
Rome in 1993, which is growing every year. - Programs that respond to the needs of society

- Environmental Sciences Program
- The Institute for Psychological Sciences in
Suburban DC began in 2001.

- 1997 The Legionaries of Christ explore the
concept of launching its first university in the
U.S. - 2000 Seed financing first full-time staff
- 2001 National wide site search completed
11Sacramento is selected
- Market research examined a variety of indicators
at the state and local level. - Sacramento was at or near the top on most
measures. - Bishop Weigand previewed the market study in
April of 2001. - Noted his longstanding goal to launch a Catholic
college or university. - Gave his canonical approval in July of 2002.
- Full-time staff relocated here by January 2003.
12Our Vision
- Develop a major teaching and research university
that enrolls 5,000 undergraduate and 2,000
graduate students at build-out. - Colleges of Arts Sciences, Education,
Engineering, Nursing, Law, etc. - Master plan a campus that will be a jewel for the
region. - Create a University community that is not only
faithfully Catholic, but genuinely welcoming to
students, faculty, and staff of other religions
as well.

- Academically well-qualified faculty who also have
a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring. - A liberal arts education that also provides solid
career preparation. - Ability to think critically and foundationally in
all areas of human thought.

- Launch with graduate programs in January of 2005
