3STEPS
- Intro to stand and which sources show or dont
show in general - Explain the dominant stand first.
- Use contextual knowledge to support or not, what
the source shows. - Explain the contrasting view.
- Contrasting view ( only applicable to sources
which show AND dont show the assertion) - Conclusion- reiterate the stand
4TIPS
1) Use all the sources and refer to them closely
in your answer. You must cite the
sources. 2) State clearly, and in separate
paragraphs, which sources show and which
dont. 3) Cross refer to contextual knowledge to
support the relevant source(s) 4) Include a
valid conclusion at the end of your essay. The
conclusion should be a summary (of both
perspectives) of what you have mentioned
in the body of your essay. 5) Dont forget to
ANSWER the question. If you fail to mention
which sources show and which do not, you
will be deemed to have failed to answer the
question, and you will get no marks. 6) Dont
merely state what each source mentions. Closely
refer the sources to one another. 7) Dont
write your entire essay in one paragraph.
5Source A
- Clearing the squatter settlements was always
difficult. When we first moved squatter
settlements from the corner of Kim Seng Road, we
moved about eight squatter families to Queenstown
which was not very far away. But in 6months
time, more than half of the families came back!
And it was difficult to make anyone give up their
squatter hut and move away from their kampong.
Resettlement was a big problem. - Adapted quotation of Lim Kim San, First
Chairman of the HDB - in Leaders of Singapore by Melanie Chew
6 Source B
- We had to move people away from Bukit Merah
which was a pig farming area. One evening I came
back to the Housing Board and saw a huge crowd of
omen there. They were pig farmers, who were bring
moved away from their homes and farms. They were
cursing and swearing at me! I had to run up to my
office through the back door. - Adapted quotation of Lim Kim San, First Chairman
of the HDB - in Leaders of Singapore by Melanie Chew
7Source C
- There was a toilet all to ourselves in the flat,
and next to the flat was a community centre and a
children's playground. We like high-rise living.
The flats had common corridors and because of
that, neighbours soon became friends. - Adapted from Kim Seng A Reflection of
Singapores Success - by Sumiko Tan
8QuestionHow far do all the sources show that
people were satisfied with the government
resettling actions?
9Introduction
- They showed that the people
- were satisfied with the government resettling
actions to a small extent.

Stand
Evaluating Source A
Source quote
Explanation
- Source A showed that people were not satisfied
with the government resettling action. The people
were not reluctant to leave their kampong and
squatter hut. As source A states, But in six
months time, more than half of the families came
back, this showed that the people did not
support the government resettling action and at
the same at the same time the government faced
problems as it was very difficult to make any
one give up their squatter hut. If the people
were satisfied with the government resettling
actions, they would not have came back to their
old houses and the government would not have
faced such difficulties.

Stand
Evaluating Source B
Source quote
Explanation
Source B showed that people were not satisfied
with the government resettling actions. They were
resentful towards the government resettling
actions. As Source B states the people were
cursing and swearing at me. Their strong
resentful towards the government actions caused
them to show their anger at the Housing Board.
Source B states that I came back to the Housing
Board and saw a huge crowd of women there.
Therefore, Source B showed that the people were
dissatisfied with the government resettling
actions and displayed their displeasure at the
Housing Board.

Evaluating Source C
Stand
Source quote
Explanation
- Source C showed that people were satisfied with
the government resettling actions. They were
happy with the facilities that the government had
provided them such as a toilet all to ourselves
in the flat, and next to the flat was a community
centre and childrens playground. Therefore,
people were satisfied with the government
resettling actions. As Source C states, we like
high-rise living showed that the peoples
satisfaction that the government resettling
actions brought them benefits like quality
facilities and able to make friends with the
neighbours.
13- From my contextual knowledge, I know that the
resettling actions had improved the living
conditions of Singaporeans. According to a survey
held in 1968, 68 of the respondents revealed
that they were satisfied as their standard of
living had improved on the whole. Furthermore,
the government resettling actions reduced the
number of slums and squatters settlements.
Therefore, my contextual knowledge does not
support my stand. -
-
Link to contextual knowledge
- I conclude that the 3 sources showed that people
were satisfied with the government resettling
actions to a small extent. However, my contextual
knowledge does not support my stand.
