When making accommodations for a Deaf or Hard of
Hearing student in your classroom consider
his/her specific needs. Follow the
recommendations on the IEP. The following are
suggestions, but implementation should be decided
on as a team with the specific child in mind.

In the classroom
  • Write important concepts on the board
  • Seat student in the front of the room or closest
    to the place where instruction often occurs.

    before instructing

CPDU Follow-up Activities

  • Adjust a current lesson plan to specifically show
    accommodations for D/HH students.
  • Create a visual schedule to depict the daily
    events of your classroom.

    environment to accommodate D/HH students.
  • Research additional resources that would assist
    you when working with D/HH students. Document
    them in an annotated bibliography as well as how
    those resources could be utilized/helpful.
  • Create a lesson, that you might use with your
    students, to help them understand hearing loss
    and the Deaf or Hard of Hearing child in your
    classroom.
  • Create an activity, to share with your
    co-workers, to help them understand hearing loss
    and the Deaf or Hard of Hearing child in their
    classrooms.
