- 1600s to 1800 "In the 18th century the most
common method of trash disposal was to open the
back door or windowOutside the original
Stoughton Hall demolished in 1781, Archaeology
Lecturer John Gerry said archaeologists found
thousands of rum bottles. (Harvard Crimson,
6-7-99) - May, 1775 Half a ton of lead from the Harvard
Hall roof is recycled into bullets that help
drive the British from Boston. (Harvard Gazette,
5-10-01) - August, 1943 Harvard Student War Services
Committee recovers clothing, metal and piano
soundboard providing material for an estimated
four machine guns. (Crimson, 8-28-42) - July, 1946 Harvard sends its refuse to Cambridge
City Dump at site of former North Cambridge Brick
Works (now Danehy Park) - April, 1972 Harvard Ecology Action begins paper,
glass battery recycling program recovering
three tons of paper per week (Crimson, 4-22-72) - 1982 Cambridge Landfill closes.
- 1991 Harvard Facilities Maintenance Operations
starts collecting recyclables - 1997-present Harvard trash sent by rail to Lee
County, South Carolina

We harvest the campus orchard for environmental
benefit and increased community health. A few of
our achievements in FY 2007
- Diversion of 7,391 tons of refuse for recycling
- Won American Forest Paper Association Campus
Recycling Award - Donation of over 2,500,000 worth of reused
furniture, clothing and books to non-profit
organizations and needy individuals - Founding participant in Cambridges 40 by 05
Recycling Campaign - Conversion of refuse collection trucks to B-20
bio-diesel, CNG and SVO for quieter, cleaner
operation

Humanity Stuff Sale, First Year Move-in,
Valentines Day Cosmetics Drive to benefit
