6WHAT HARM CAN WATER POLLUTION DO?
7The total damage from water pollution in the U.S.
is about 100,000,000,000 per year
8POLLUTION KILLS WILDLIFE
9WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SOURCES OF POLLUTION?
10Non-Point Chemical Sources of Water Pollution
(cannot trace to specific source)
- Farms
- Livestock feed lots
- Logged forests
- Streets
- Lawns
- Septic tanks
- Construction sites
- Parking lots
- Roadways
11In Europe, up to 80 of the rivers show a buildup
of nitrogen compounds, mostly from fertilizers.
12Point Sources of Water Pollution (identifiable
sources of pollution)
- Runoff from land 44
- Air pollution that falls
as acid rain 33 - Shipping accidental spills 2
- Ocean dumping of wastes 10
- Offshore mining, oil,
gas drilling 1
13Each year, more than 5 trillion gallons of waste
are dumped into U.S. coastal waters.
14Some rivers in Latin America carry bacteria from
sewage that is more than 1000 times what is safe
for drinking water.

17WHAT ABOUT COASTAL CONNECTICUT?
18CTs LONG ISLAND SOUND IS THE LARGEST WILDLIFE
HABITAT IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND.
19LONG ISLAND SOUND is NEW ENGLANDS REFUGE for
ESTUARY WILDLIFE
20LONG ISLAND SOUND IS . . .
A Feeding Ground Nursery Area for Flounder,
Lobsters, Clams.
21The Sound Supports a Variety of Creatures,
Including Seals, Waterfowl, Seabirds, Sea
Turtles, Fishes, Scallops.
22MORE THAN 15 MILLION PEOPLE LIVE CLOSE ENOUGH TO
LONG ISLAND SOUND TO INFLUENCE ITS WATER QUALITY
AND THE ANIMALS AND PLANTS THAT LIVE THERE.
23While the Sound provides natural habitats for
more than 1,200 invertebrates, 170 species of
fish, dozens of species of migratory birds. .
.
24Long Island Sound provides economic and
recreational benefits to millions of people in
Connecticut and New York.
25IS IT POSSIBLE FOR WILDLIFE AND AN HUMAN URBAN
POPULATION TO CO-HABITATE IN A PRISTENE ESTUARY?
26WHAT EFFECT DO WE HAVE ON THIS ECOSYSTEM?
27One-fourth of a teaspoon of oil will form a 200
square foot oil film on the Sounds surface.
Cars, highways and parking lots add oil, grease,
and lead to runoff going into the Sound.
28Litter washes from the streets into storm drains,
on its way to the Sound.
Storm drains are part of nonpoint source
pollution.
29As water flows over or underground, it picks up
pollutants. Farming can add nutrients and
pesticides from animal wastes and fertilizers to
the runoff.
Runoff is the major source of nonpoint pollution
entering Long Island Sound. Rain washes
contaminants, litter and soil into streams,
rivers and bays.
30SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS DISCHARGE MORE THAN 1
BILLION GALLONS OF TREATED WASTEWATER IN LONG
ISLAND SOUND EACH DAY.
31BEACHES OF LONG ISLAND SOUND MAY BE CLOSED FOR
WEEKS AT A TIME.

34DO YOU TOSS YOUR TRASH GARBAGE RATHER THAN
PACKING IT BACK OUT?
- ARE YOU PART OF THE PROBLEM?
35SOME AREAS OF THE SOUND LOOK LIKE THIS.

SOUND IS BEING MADE.

39Thanks to unprecedented cleanup protection
efforts over the last 10 years, Long Island Sound
today is healthier, cleaner, more accessible
than it has been in decades.
40IT TAKES THE EFFORTS OF ALL OF US TO CLEAN UP OUR
WORLD.
41 BE PART OF THE ANSWER, NOT PART OF THE
PROBLEM.
