What will we learn today?

ANIMAL KINGDOM
3
The animal kingdom is made up of two main groups
  • ANIMALS WITHOUT BACKBONES
  • These animals without backbones are called
  • INVERTEBRATES
  • Molluscs
  • Worms
  • Arthropods
  • Echinoderms
  • Coelenterates
  • ANIMALS WITH BACKBONES
  • These animals with backbones are called
  • VERTEBRATES
  • Mammals
  • Birds
  • Reptiles
  • Amphibians
  • Fish

4
We are vertebrates and have a skeleton to keep us
upright and to help us to move
5
MAMMALS
  • They are warm blooded animals or
  • they can regulate their own
  • temperature.
  • Mammals retain the young in their
  • bodies until they are ready to be
  • born. When the young are born
  • they are fed by the mother on milk.
  • Most mammals have hair, four legs
  • and tail. However aquatic mammals
  • have fins and a smooth, hairless
  • skin.

MAMMALS
the blue whale
  • Mammals have a highly
  • developed nervous system.
  • They live on land and in the
  • sea.
  • The largest mammal is the
  • blue whale which often
  • exceeds 30m in length.
  • Shrews and mice are the
  • smallest. They are often less
  • than 5cm, excluding their tail.

BIRDS
  • They are warm blooded
  • vertebrate animals with wings and
  • bodies covered with feathers for
  • warmth and to help them to fly.
  • Birds have lungs for breathing and
  • a heart with four chambers.
  • All adult birds are covered in
  • feathers even though some are
  • born naked.

BIRDS
  • The female lays her eggs in nests
  • and the young are cared for by the
  • adult birds until they grow and are
  • able to leave the nest.
  • Many people believe that birds can
  • be identified by their ability to fly,
  • but that's not true. Although all
  • birds have wings, not all birds can
  • fly!.....and not all animals that can
  • fly are birds.
  • All birds have feathers .. and they
  • are the only animals that have
  • feathers!

REPTILES
  • Reptiles are cold blooded
  • vertebrates. This means they
  • cannot maintain a body
  • temperature much different than
  • their environment.
  • A reptile's skin is usually covered
  • with dry scales.
  • All reptiles are carnivorous. They
  • eat insects or the flesh of other
  • animals.
  • They breathe through lungs

REPTILES
  • Most reptiles lay eggs with hard
  • shells and they hatch as small
  • versions of the adult.
  • The young hatch fully formed,
  • without a larval stage, ready to
  • seek their own food and care for
  • themselves.
  • Reptiles have been on earth for
  • over 300 million years .. that is
  • a very long time!

AMPHIBIANS
  • They are cold blooded vertebrate
  • animals that generally spend their
  • larval or tadpole stage in fresh
  • water.
  • They live on water and land, but
  • breed in water
  • Amphibians were the first animals
  • to venture on to land. They
  • emerged from the oceans over 300
  • million years ago.

AMPHIBIANS
  • They are special because the early
  • stages of their lives are very
  • different to the adult stages.
  • The young amphibians are called
  • tadpoles and they have tails and no
  • legs. The adults have four legs and
  • only some of them have tails.
  • They all have smooth skins with no
  • hair or scales.
  • Amphibians generally need a lot of
  • humidity in order to survive

FISH
  • They are cold blooded and
  • aquatic animals.
  • Fish use gills to obtain
  • oxygen. The gills are behind
  • the head.
  • Fish live in both fresh and
  • salt water and can be found
  • all over the world, except in
  • some very hot springs and
  • the Dead Sea because it is
  • too salty.

FISH
  • Fish are oviparous animals.
  • The females lay their eggs in
  • water.
  • The young emerge from the
  • eggs, they are called fry.
  • Fish are animals which have
  • scales and fins located in the
  • thorax, stomach, back and
  • tail.
