• smaller than the Kodiak and polar bears
• two meters in length
• usually black
• can be brownish or yellowish
• shiny,smooth,thick fur
• short sharp claws

• climb trees to find food
• eat nuts, plants, berries, insects and small
  animals
• honey for treat

Habitat

• live all over North America

Life Cycle

• life span 15-35 years
• protected by mother bear until 1 yr. old
• mother teaches cubs to climb trees, open locked
  cars and hunt for food
• need protection against males

Activities/Behavior

• males eat cubs
• mothers fight threatening animals including male
  bears
• cubs run up trees if in danger (cubs identify
  danger by mothers warning growl)

Evolution

• some bears extinct
• todays bears evolved from cave bears
