Physical Education Major
  • Can be taken in 11 12th grade 
  • Level III

  • This course is designed for those who are
    interested in Health or Physical Education
    careers, Athletic Training, Coaching, Officiating
    and advanced levels of sports.  Two to three
    classes/week will be in the gym and fulfill the
    0.4 credit required for Physical Education. 
    Classroom studies will include analysis of
    skills, techniques of coaching, officiating,
    principals of physical training, prevention and
    care of athletic injuries, first aid and CPR. 
    Students should have a "B" or better in both
    Health and Biology I and have an "O" in Physical
    Education class or have permission of the Major
    instructor.  In addition there is a course
    requirement of participation in a 5K race(cost)
    and performing a community service for Special
    Olympics of York.

  • Developing an individual fitness training program
    based on the Principles of training, health
    consideration, and goals of the Individual.
  • Instructional and practical experience in First
    Aid and CPR.
  • Practical experience in athletic taping and the
    and Rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
  • Methods of teaching strategies.
  • Developing a lesson plan to use to teach a P.E.
    class.
  • Researching Olympic sports and unusual
    sports-oral presentations.
  • Developing one's philosophy of coaching based on
    experience, research, and guest speakers.
  • Team teach an activity.
  • Teach an advanced skill.
  • Initiative problem solving-low ropes course
  • Advanced skills in individual and team sports
  • Skills testing in activities.
  • Creating new games.
  • Sledding, mountain biking, activities outside the
    PE curriculum.
  • Teaching in a coaching situation.
  • Sportsmanship, teamwork, and team teaching in
    activities.
  • Leadership roles as a teacher, captain, official.

Course Requirements
  • Participate in a 5K-road race for the experience
    of racing against other elite runners and to
    train for running a 3.1 mile race.

  • Participate in a community service for Special
    Olympics of York - for a minimum of 2 hours.

  • Students will learn CPR
  • Students will learn Basic First Aid
  • Students can become Certified as Adult CPR and
    Basic First Aid

  • Developing one's integrity and efforts in
    teamwork interactions in planning, organizing and
    participating in a Mountain Biking Field Trip to
    Lake Redman.

  • Use the materials and experiences that the class
    has learned throughout the year in a culminating
    field trip to Genesee Valley Outdoor Center Ropes
    Course.
