Jesus said that people are like lamps or torches
the good they do is like a light shining out for
others to see. This light can show people the way
when they are in darkness it can help them to
see what is right and to do what is right.

Listen to this story.

"Mary was born in Jamaica where her mother used
to look after soldiers who were getting better
after the war. When her mother died Mary took
over the boarding house and helped the people
there survive the dangerous diseases of cholera
and yellow fever that struck the island in the
1800s. She became very good at nursing the sick
people she worked with, at spotting the symptoms
of disease and giving the right medicine to make
her patients better. When Mary heard about the
war happening in the Crimea, where Florence
Nightingale worked, she thought she could do
something to help the soldiers there. More of
them were dying from the germs and dirt in the
hospitals than were being killed by war wounds.
Many were dying from cholera, a disease that Mary
knew how to treat from her time in Jamaica.
Unfortunately, each time Mary offered to help she
was turned down. It seems Britain was not ready
to welcome a black nurse even if she had the
skills and experience to help.

This didn't put Mary off. She went to the Crimea
using her own money and started a home for sick
people by herself. Here she gave the soldiers
warmth, comfort, good food and the medicines they
needed. At times Mary even went on to the
battlefield taking her donkey loaded with food
and medicine to bravely feed and nurse the
injured soldiers. This was very dangerous and she
was risking her life to help these men. They
called her Mother Seacole. After the war she went
to England. She had used up all her money on
taking care of others and was now ill herself.
The newspapers of the time told their English
readers about all she had done. Many people were
grateful and raised money to help her. She was
awarded medals for her selfless work in the
Crimea and people began to see how much she had
done to teach the nurses of her day about caring
for the sick."

Sadly some stories of the important things done
by black people have been missed out of the
history books. People have not always been fair
in the way they wrote about what happened in the
past. Black History Month is about finding out
about the unsung heroes and celebrating all that
they have brought to the world.
