For some time, he has helped out at a local
stables at week-ends and is a valued member of
the team. He enjoys the world of riding and
livery and has been considering for some time the
possibility of a career with horses. Through
mixing with a variety of people both on the yard
and at events, Ade has become aware of
progression opportunities and related
qualifications. He chooses the diploma because it
allows him to pursue his interests but also is
looking forward to learning about other aspects
of the environment and land-based sector. He
attends a specialist college for most of his

Project
Ade does two separate weeks of work experience
with local vets, the first working with small
animals and the second with an associated rural
practice that caters for large animals. The vet
was able to put him in touch with a farrier and
he is able to spend occasional days
work-shadowing. His role during the pony camp in
the holidays at the end of year 10 gave him
further experience of book-keeping and planning
activities for children. He was even able to help
plan the menus for evening meals.
Ade makes good use of his time helping at the
riding stables and volunteers to re-think the
programme and organisation of the annual pony
camp for young children. This is a week-long
residential (camping) event that runs during the
summer holidays. He evaluates the existing
schedule by interviewing staff, previous
participants and parents, costs the components
that make up the week and proposes an amended
programme including social and enrichment
activities. He then presents his recommendations
as a formal proposal to the proprietor and riding
instructors, taking personal responsibility for
organising the evening events.
