The Ancient Egyptians believed after you died you
lived, in a different world with gods and
goddesses of the dead.

Pharaohs and Queens were the richest of all. They
had very rich burials. The poor had modest
burials.

Beliefs of the afterlife
  • Egyptians believed that after you died you began
    a new life.
  • They believed that they had one great wish .
  • They would also traveled , to another world to
    live with gods and goddess of the dead.
  • They believed that when you die Ba would come
    and take the persons soul and Ka would be your
    twin.
  • Mummification was a long , complicated and
    expensive process.

The Ba and Ka
  • They believed that when a person died that his Ba
    and Ka would be released from the body.
  • They believed that they could keep in contact
    that way.
  • The thought that they could travel back and forth
    from the body.
  • They also thought that they could return to their
    own body.

  • They say that it took over 70 days to prepare a
    body for burials.
  • They worked close to where the mummies would be
    buried.
  • They removed the brain out of the mummies nose.
  • Their was some writing of their burials.
  • Some have carved / shaped burials.

Steps taken by the Egyptian embalmers to prepare
a mummy.
  • It took about 70 days to
  • prepare a body.
  • The embalmers first took out the,
  • inner organs. They cut a 7 inch
  • opening in the left side of the
  • body to remove the liver, lungs,
  • stomach, and the intestines.
  • They left the heart in place
  • most of the time. However
  • sometimes ,they removed it and replaced it with a
    stone
  • scarab.
  • Small bundles of natron ,were placed in the body
    cavity.

Preparing a mummy continued
  • The brain was then removed through the nose with
    a metal hook.
  • Each of the organs was placed in a chemical
    (natron) and put in its own container called a
    canopic jar.
  • The corpse was placed on a slanted embalming bed
    with a grove at the bottom.
  • It was covered with natron a grainy chemical
    found in despite in the Nile river.
  • Fluids from the corpse dripped in to the
    container as the body dried out .

  • Each organ was wrapped in
  • linen and covered with a mask of a god.
  • Each mummified organ
  • was put into its own canopic jar.
  • The lid of the canopic jars
  • also bore the image of the god.
