Title: Groups of Algae

1
Groups of Algae
  • There are three groups of multicellular algae
  • Green algae
  • Brown algae
  • Red algae
  • These algae get their color from the pigments in
    their cells.

2
The Green Algae
  • Found in Phylum Chlorophyta
  • Green algae can be found as single cells,
    colonies, and as multicellular organisms.
  • Reproduce both sexually and asexually.

3
  • Volvox are green algae that live in colonies.
  • The volvox in these colonies communicate and
    share resources.
  • Spirogyra are threadlike green algae. These
    threadlike colonies are called filaments.
  • Ulva is an example of a multicellular algae. It
    is sometimes called sea lettuce.

4
The Brown Algae
  • Phylum Phaeophyta
  • Commonly called sea weeds
  • The largest brown algae is kelp
  • Many brown algae have bladders filled with air to
    help them float.

5
The Red Algae
  • Phylum Rhodophyta
  • Red algae live anywhere from the waters surface
down to a depth of 170 meters.
  • One species of red algae is often used to wrap
