• Demand for Electricity in Cambodia
• 70 Rural population lack access to electricity
• Kerosene is predominantly used for domestic
  lighting
• Some use car batteries for lighting and TV
• Grid electricity will not be available to
  majority of the Cambodia for many years to come
• Need alternatives to supply electricity to this
  population
• Solar Photovoltaics (PV) is a mature technology
  with a range of possible applications in Cambodia

National Energy Policy (1994)

• To provide an adequate supply of low cost energy
  for homes throughout Cambodia
• To ensure a reliable, secure electricity supply
  at prices which encourage investment in Cambodia
  and economic development
• To encourage exploration of environmentally and
  socially acceptable development of energy
  resources needed to supply to all sectors of the
  Cambodian Economy
• To encourage efficient use of energy and to
  minimize environmental effects resulting from
  energy supply and use

Energy Demand in Cambodia

• 24 small isolated power systems
• Virtually no transmission link between load
  centers
• Largest system by far is the capital Phnom Penh
  (75 of countrys demand)
• Peak demand for 2003 120MW in Phnom Penh and
  40MW for all other provincial centers
• Annual consumption 55kWh per capita
• Electrification rate 20 of the total countrys
  households
• Emergency rehabilitation and reconstruction is
  still ongoing
