- Dauphin Island
- Sea Lab Trip
Fun. Sun. Friends. Knowledge. Memories.
2Friday, March 24, we arrive by bus.
3Our first class- History of Dauphin Island.
Tour of Fort Gaines
4 Visiting the latrine.
Latrine is another name for bathroom. So in
other words we are sitting on 19th Century
toilets.
5Meeting the blacksmith.
6The heart of Fort Gaines.
7Fire in
the hole!
8We visit the Indian Mounds.
9Now, we observe a Goat Tree.
They are called Goat Trees because long ago
when there were goats on the island, the would
climb in these trees when hurricanes came.
10After the Indian Mound and Goat Tree observation
walk, we head to the beach for free time.
11No one really felt like getting in the water
though.
12While on the beach, we also came across an old
piano washed ashore from Hurricane Katrina.
13Then we went back to the dorms, for the night.
14Then it was off to bed.
15Early the next morning we assembled outside for
breakfast.
16The food was amazing.
17Our second class-
Sea Life in and Around Dauphin Island
18The boat trip.
We boarded the ship,
said goodbye,
and set sail!
19Then we drop the net.
They use pulleys to raise and lower the net.
20They finally brought the net back up.
Some of what we caught we had to throw back, and
the rest we closely examined.
21After lunch that day we changed clothes, then
headed for
The Marsh
22A marsh (other wise known as an estuary) is where
fresh and salt water mix to create a completely
different ecosystem than that of the ocean or the
river.
23It was muddy, gross, and stinkyBut we LOVED
every minute of it!
Maybe a little too much.
24The point of the whole thing was to catch many
diverse species and examine them.
25The next day -after a wonderful dinner, a good
night of rest, and another great breakfast- we
went to the classroom and had a quick class, then
dissected squids and ate some calamari along with
some shrimp.
26Thenwehadtoleave.
