Janeen Adrion Kochan holds an M.S. in Engineering
from the Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in
Human Factors from the University of Central
Florida in Orlando, FL. She has been involved in
human factors research in medicine and aviation
since 1980. Primary areas of research include
unexpected events, pilot expertise, human
performance, decision making, stress and fatigue,
automation, workload, resource management, and
training. Recent publications and presentations
in aviation human factors have been in the areas
of unexpected events, automation, human factors
aspects of the Notices to Airmen system,
aeronautical decision-making, pilot workload,
advanced maneuvering and upset recovery training,
and the neuroscientific correlates of human
performance in the study of surprise. Dr. Kochan
is former Boeing 767 Captain and Crew Resource
Management Instructor for a major U.S. Air
Carrier. She has over 13,000 hours flying time in
a variety of aircraft and has type ratings in the
B-767/757, DC-8, DC-9, YS-11, and numerous
corporate jets. She holds current and active
Airframe and Powerplant, Inspector Authorization,
Flight Instructor, and FAA Designated Pilot
Examiner privileges. In addition to providing
training and evaluation services to the aviation
industry, she works under contract with a variety
of organizations in human factors training and
evaluation.
