Bioengineering FAQs
2
Topics
  • BSE vs. BAS
  • Minors
  • Dual major and dual degree
  • Career path
  • Free electives
  • Study abroad
  • Summer Internships

3
BSE vs. BAS
  • BSE Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • BAS Bachelor of Applied Science (in Biomedical
    Science)
  • BSE is the ABET accredited engineering program
  • BAS is more flexibleoriginal purpose was to
allow students to pursue dual degrees and other
paths such as premed more easily
  • BAS is NOT easier than BSE

4
Why choose BSE?
  • Want accredited engineering program, potentially
    become licensed professional engineer
  • Want in-depth BE-focused curriculum
  • Want to study engineering in grad school

5
Why choose BAS?
  • Dont need to become licensed professional
    engineer
  • Want broader curriculum
  • Want to pursue dual degrees/majors
  • Have other career goals in mind medical school,
    consulting, healthcare management, law, etc.
  • Want to study science in grad school

6
How do the curricula differ?
  • Main differences (BSE,BAS)
  • Engineering courses required (14.5,12)
  • Career path courses (3,5)
  • BAS has choice of MATH 241 or statistics course
  • BSEsenior design BASsenior thesis

BAS

9
General Recommendation
  • Start with BSE, then if theres something you
want to do but cant fit in, switch to BAS. BAS
gives you more options whereas BSE is the
stronger (but more confining) degree program.

10
What minors can I do?
  • Any minor you want most are 6-8 c.u.
  • Common minors include
  • Math
  • Engineering Entrepreneurship
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Biology
  • Nanotechnology
  • Statistics
  • List of minors http//www.college.upenn.edu/minor
    s/

11
What about SEAS minors?
  • Every department in SEAS (except BE) offers a
    minor
  • Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Computer and Telecommunications Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

12
What is the difference between a dual major and a
dual degree?
  • Dual major (BSE students only) one degree, two
    majors
  • BSE degree BE EE or BE MSE
  • BSE degree BE Biochemistry or BE Math
  • Dual degree two degrees (from different
    schools), two majors
  • BE (BAS or BSE) and Wharton
  • BE (BAS or BSE) and College (any majoreconomics,
    biology, etc.)

13
What courses should I take in the career path?
  • Courses to create depth in area of interest
    (biomechanics, biomaterials, biotechnology, etc.)
  • Organic chemistry (for premeds)
  • Courses towards minor (depends on minor)
  • Engineering entrepreneurship, Nanotech, Math,
    Statistics, and science minors
  • Career path is an opportunity to consciously
explore or bolster interests in a particular
aspect of BE or a career in BE

14
Free Electives
  • Can take almost any course Penn offers to
    undergraduates, except for the following
  • http//www.seas.upenn.edu/ugrad/no_credit.html

15
Can I study abroad?
  • YES!
  • When junior year most common
  • Where anywhere you want
  • Common places include Australia, England, France,
    Spain, and Hong Kong
  • How can take BE courses abroad to satisfy BE
requirements (but cant take premed requirements
    abroad)
  • BE Dept and SEAS are EXTREMELY FLEXIBLE in
    fulfilling requirements while abroaddont need
    an exact match for courses
  • We want you to study abroadtarget is 25 of all
    BE students

16
Summer Internships
  • Career Services
  • Job listings, OCR
  • Resume and cover letter writing, interviewing
  • Library
  • BE Department
