7Activity to Apply Subscales
- In group of 10 or more, separate by a specific
subscale e.g., pressure-prompted vs.
early-starting - Set up hypothetical scenario e.g., they are a
project team just assembled - Give 5-10 minutes for them to discuss how they
will proceed - As leader, observe each group and share what you
notice - Have them share their approach
8Does Type Change Over Time?
- In early life, dominant function prevails,
balanced by development of auxiliary function - Task of second half of life move toward full
development of all of oneself
9Type Development, contd.
- These shifts in the focus and direction of
energy do not mean that ones basic type
preferences have changed. Rather, the individual
moves toward increased balance and flexibility,
while experiencing new sources of energy and an
increased sense of satisfaction. - -- Katharine Myers
10When is Second Half?
- Timing of stages varies by individual
- For most people, midlife transition is between 35
and 50 years of age - Consider the case of Jackie (p. 22 Introduction
to Type Dynamics and Development)
11Foundations of Jungs Model
- Each person has innate urge to grow
- Development means using conscious control
over/facility in use of a function - When people are conscious or self-aware, they can
make behavioral choices - Development is an interaction between innate type
preferences and the environment - The human psyche is self-regulating and capable
of healing itself
12Goal of Type Development
- The goal of type development, then, is not equal
development and use of all the functions, but
rather the ability to use each mental process
with some facility when it is appropriate. - -- Katharine D. Myers
13What is Good Type Development?
- Trust and excellence in using dominant function
for purpose and consistency - Well-developed auxiliary function for balance and
support - Ability to use tertiary and inferior functions as
appropriate
14Helping Clients Learn from the Past
- To make positive use of unpleasant experiences,
must view behavior objectively - Think of/list times you have not been yourself
- What triggered them?
- What were the signs?
- After an inferior function experience, reflect.
- Examine whether this experience caused awareness
of something you needed to know.
15Developing Non-Preferred Functions
- Find role models and observe them
- Ask people with opposite preferences to be
consultants to you - Start small
- Do this when relaxed, not pressured
- Be patient
- Dont get discouraged
- Maintain a sense of humor!
