Elements

• Elements that show similar chemical behavior and
  are listed vertically as a family.Families of
  elements with similar chemical properties that
  lie in the same vertical columns are groups. The
  first column is group 1 are the Alkali
  metals,group 2 are Alkaline Earth metals,and the
  large section in the middle are Transition
  metals,group 7are the Halogens,and group 8 are
  The Noble Gases.

Metals Nonmetals

• Most of the elements are metals. Metals are
  efficient conductors of heat and electricity,
  Malleable, ductile and have a lustrous
  appearance. Elements to the left of the periodic
  table are metals except for Hydrogen. The
  elements that appear in the upper right corner
  are nonmetals. Nonmetals lack properties than
  metals but show much more variation in their
  properties. Elements that lie close to the
  zig-zag line are a mixture of metallic and
  nonmetallic properties and are called metalloids

Diatomic Molecules

• Elements that appear in nature in the uncombined
  state are elements in group 8(noble gases). These
  atoms do not combine readily with other elements.
• Air contains nitrogen and oxygen in which they do
  not contain single atoms but instead contain
  diatomic molecules. Br,I,N,Cl,H,O,F
• Other elements are solids in elemental form
  contain a large number of atoms packed like
  marbles in a jar.
