• GENERAL
• The Centre for Distance-spanning Technology, CDT
  is a research joint venture between Luleå
  University of Technology and a number of Swedish
  companies with business interest in information
  technology.
• MISSION AND STRATEGY
• CDT mission is to create sustainable positive
  regional development in terms of increased
  knowledge, business growth and improved quality
  of life.
• CDT strategy is to promote research, education,
  innovation and new business creation, within the
  scope of distance-spanning information
  technology, by being an excellent and stimulating
  collaborative environment.
• ORGANISATION
• The Core Partner organisations of CDT are Luleå
  University of Technology, Ericsson, Frontec,
  Telia and Teracom.
• The CDT Board is in charge of the overall
  strategic directions and members of the board are
  appointed by CDT Core Partner organisations.
• The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), has the
  overall operational responsibility for CDT and is
  appointed by the CDT Board.
• PEOPLE
• Average number of persons (year 2000) engaged in
  CDT research projects and activities were
• 15 full time researchers from the University
• 10 full time persons from CDT industrial
  partners
• gt50 part time persons

• SITES
• CDT operates in Luleå, Skellefteå, Boden, Piteå
  and Stockholm. CDT headquarter is located at the
  Luleå University of Technology campus, 5 km north
  downtown Luleå.
• ECONOMY
• Annual (year 2001) turnover was KSEK 38 000
  (KECU 3 800). Out of that, approximately 40 is
  in terms of effort/people free of charge.
• CDT is financed mainly by independent external
  national and international (EU frame programs)
  sources. Each core partners also contributes in
  terms of an annual CDT membership fee.
• DISTANCE-SPANNING CULTURE
• Coming from different organisations and working
  cultures, located at different geographical
  sites, people joining CDT must work closely
  together.
• Hence, it is necessary and natural to use
  advanced systems for electronic meetings,
  connecting CDT people at all sites and
  organisations.
• LEGAL MATTERS
• Since CDT is a contractual joint venture, legal
  entity is Luleå University of Technology.
• The overall joint venture (between core partners)
  is based on a General Agreement defining the
  overall terms and polices of collaboration such
  as confidentiality and intellectual property
  rights.
• Collaboration in specific projects, between
  project partners (which doesnt necessary include
  all CDT core partners) is based on a Project
  Agreement, defining project specific terms such
  as background and foreground information,
  resource commitments etc.

• Center for Distance-spanning Technology, CDT is a

• CDT was established early 1995. Today, We are
  empowered by more than 30 researchers, mainly on
  contract from our core partners Luleå University
  of Technology, Ericsson, Frontec, Telia and
  Teracom.
• Our strategic objectives, within the scope of
  distance-spanning IT, comprise world class
  research, education to excellence, innovations
  and business growth - All based on the key areas
  of competence at the University such as
• Mobile Internet, through the new Mäkitalo
  Research Center, focusing on enabling technology
  for new wireless Internet services
• Software technology focusing on efficient,
  scalable, distributed, hardware platform
  independent software architectures,
• Computer communication focusing on next
  generation Internet networking solutions in terms
  of performance, quality of service, mobility and
  efficiency.
• Telecommunication systems focusing on the
  physical layer on both wire-line andwireless
  communication systems, supporting next generation
  Internet traffic.
• PROSPEROUS MEETINGPLACE
• For the industry, fighting under an increasing
  global market pressure and high demand for quick
  revenues, CDT is a prosperous garden for
  creativity, visions and build-up of strategic
  knowledge and competence.For the university, CDT
  is a market for new ideas and Research results
  and a training environment for graduate students
  gaining business understanding and awareness of
  industrial culture and values.
• THE UNIQUE TESTBED
• CDT also runs a unique IT and service test-bed.
  The test-bed has become very popular among people
  volunteering as test-pilots in the city of
  Luleå. Business companies now discover the asset
  of having an independent, well established
  test-bed for new technology and/or new IT/Mobile
  services. We assist in setting-up and performing
  different types of tests on existing or advanced
  technical platforms in contexts engaging
  sub-communities or all our 3000 registered
  test-pilots.
