Compromise of 1850
  • It's all about slavery and who will be allowed to
    have it in their state!
  • CA became a state and in return Utah and New
    Mexico would get to decide when they became
    states.
  • Officially created UT Territory with Fillmore as
    its capital.
  • Judges were to be federal and were brought in
    from the east.

Utah WarGossip, Gossip, Rumor, Rumor
  • Polygamy officially announced in 1852.
  • 1857 - rumors of murder, destruction of legal
    records, unfair treatment of non-Mormons and open
    rebellion in the territory reaches Pres.
    Buchanan.
  • New governor was sent out along with an army to
    support him if needed.

More Miscommunication
  • Brigham Young only heard an army was coming and
    not that he had been replaced as Gov.
  • Militia enlistment went up and was sent to harass
    the army to including burning Fort Bridger.
  • Stopped the army in Wyoming.
  • Evacuated SLC and northern communities.
  • 1858 military arrived and set up Camp Floyd.

The military Camps of Floyd and Douglas
  • Floyd became 3rd largest city in territory and
    brought in lots of and surplus supplies.
  • Negative in that Fairfield became the
    stereotypical "Wild-west" town.
  • Civil War caused troops from Floyd to go back
    east so they sold everything and Fairfield calmed
    down.
  • Alfred Cumming was very fair as Governor, then
    came Patrick O'Connor.

  • Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act 1862
  • no one may be married to more than one person at
    a time
  • No church may own more than 50,000 in property
  • Poland Bill 1874
  • Federal Courts have jurisdiction
  • Edmunds Act 1882
  • Polygamy punishable by 500 fine and no one
    convicted may vote, hold office, serve on jury
  • Edmunds-Tucker Act 1887
  • required plural wives to testify or go to jail,
  • abolished local militia
  • confiscated church property
  • took away women's right to vote
  • why and what problems could this cause

Polygamy and the court
  • Sugarhouse was set up as a prison.
  • Many went into hiding or went to jail instead of
    abandoning wives/kids, or left country/area
  • Reynolds v. The US 1879
  • polygamy is not illegal to believe in, only to
    practice.
  • "Cohab Hunts" - 20 per polygamist.
  • 1890 LDS Church Pres Wilford Woodruff issues a
    manifesto declaring his advice to "refrain from
    contracting any marriages forbidden by the law."

Bridging the Gap
  • There was distrust between Mormons and
    non-Mormons due to secrecy and unwillingness to
    ask questions.
  • Liberal Party (Started by O'Connor) v People's
    Party
  • Utah reps went to the World's Fair in Chicago and
    set up exhibits and competed when able
  • Wilford invited non-Mormons to go through the
    temple on the first day it was opened.

Women -Had the right to vote, lost it, and got it
back!
  • State Constitution included women.
  • Famous Suffragists came to Utah impressed by
    roles women had here along with their
    organizational skills.
  • Emmeline B. Wells
  • Editor of Woman's Exponent and worked towards
    women's rights.
  • 1st woman to get an honorary Degree (BYU). 
  • Only woman with a statue in the Capital Rotunda.
  • Martha Hughes Cannon
  • Ran against her husband on the Democratic ticket
    and won as senator for Salt Lake County in 1896.

Prohibition
  • Law to prevent selling or manufacturing of
    liquor.
  • Did not get included in the State Constitution
    due to controversy.
  • US Amendment 18 did nationally and then repealed
    with 21st.
