NASA Heat Capacity Mapping Mission (HCMM)

• Polar orbiting, 1 km spatial resolution, visible
  and thermal (two bands).
• Calibrated data.
• 230 and 1430 overpasses optimized for analysis
  of the earth surfaces capacity to retain heat.
• Operated April 1978 September 1980.
• 25,000 scenes collected.

Accomplishments in FY 2008

• 2500 digital images recovered from aging tapes
  were ingested into the NGDC tape library.
• Project initiated to put this data online with a
  spatial / temporal query system.
• HOV, NGDC and NGS reviewed and selected a
  scanning system.
• HOV purchased the scanner and received training.
• NASA GSFC staged the film rolls and HOV picked up
  the first batch.

Significance

• Falls under the NOAA-NASA MOU of 1989, which
  states that NOAA will use its best efforts to
  assume responsibility at a time to be agreed upon
  for active long-term archiving and appropriate
  science support activities for atmospheric and
  oceans data..
• Covers a sparse period in the satellite data
  record.
• Well documented sensor and mission, with solid
  publication record.
• Calibrated thermal data would be useful in
  extending cloud cover and sea surface temperature
  records.
• Heat capacity data would be useful for analyzing
  urban heat islands and land surface climatology
  for the covered time period.

HOVServices has purchased a Leica DSW 700 film
scanner. This will be used to scan the HCMM film
and the NGS aerial film collection that is on the
same film stock.

FY-09 CDMP Tasks

• Initiate digital scanning of the film.
• Initiate the recovery of the metadata printed on
  the image frames.
• Delivery in JPEG2000 format on hard drives.
