WHEN TO REVIEW MUHA POLICY PROCEDURE
  • Anytime youre performing a procedure for the
    first time at MUHA
  • ESPECIALLY an invasive procedure or procedure
    that involves risk to patient

Accessing Policy Manuals by Intranet
  • Most policy manuals are found on the Intranet
  • The following screen shots show you how to access
    the policies
  • First go to the MUSC Intranet page

Select Policy Toolbox from the Toolbox Drop Down

Click on appropriate policy manual. Most
clinical policies are in Med Ctr-Clinical Manual

  • Always look up policy and procedure before
    performing a procedure for the first time.
  • Especially if the procedure is invasive and/or
    involves risk to the patient.

SPECIMEN LABELING
  • Labeling of a specimen with the wrong patient
    name or other wrong information can cause
    serious consequences for the patient!!

SPECIMEN LABELING
  • Mislabeling of specimens occurs most frequently
    when the labeling is postponed for ANY reason

Specimen Labeling
  • Labeling of specimen MUST BE DONE AT THE BEDSIDE
    (including patients on isolation precautions)
  • DO NOT LEAVE THE PATIENTS ROOM WITH AN UNLABELED
    SPECIMEN!

HOW TO LABEL A SPECIMEN
  • Patients first and last name
  • Patients MRN (medical record number)
  • Date and time of collection
  • Name of person obtaining the specimen
  • Source and/or specific site of the specimen

REMEMBER
  • SPECIMEN MUST BE LABELED BEFORE LEAVING THE
    PATIENTS ROOM!!
