• Founded in 1624 by the Dutch
• Known as New Netherland
• City of New Amsterdam was the center of shipping
  and trade
• English wanted New Netherland
• Peter Stuyvesant surrendered the colony
• Renamed New York for the Duke of York
• 1691, New York elected a legislature

New Jersey

• Originally part of New York
• Given to Lord John Berkley and Sir George
  Carteret
• Named New Jersey after the island of Jersey near
  England
• Developed a representative assembly
• Colonists made local laws

• Founded in 1682
• William Penn founder
• Got land in payment of debt by the king
• Belonged to Quakers
• Everyone equal in Gods sight
• Pacifists
• Tolerant of others beliefs
• Persecuted for their beliefs
• Philadelphia first city (City of Brotherly Love)
• Developed a legislative assembly

Delaware

• Originally settled in 1638 by Swedes
• Became the Three Lower Colonies of Pennsylvania
• Charter of Privileges allowed them to form own
  legislature in 1703
• Became their own colony after that
