1Old age EU migration and political involvement
The retirement municipality of Mijas as a case
study
Vth European Congress of Gerontology July 2-5,
2003 / Barcelona, Spain
INTRODUCTION Labour retirement is no longer
necessarily the same as political retirement.
Research has so far paid scant attention to the
political implications of more people living
healthier old ages, much less to the
cross-national dimension that European
citizenship entails. The Spanish Mediterranean
coast is consolidating some regions of EU
immigration, with a strong presence of citizens
aged 65 and over. The Costa del Sol is becoming
one of these retirement places, and the
municipality of Mijas its chief exponent.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS To what extent do those
citizens feel represented by political
authorities and institutions? How and how much do
they participate in politics in their new
residences? Does Spanish politics benefit from
their longer democratic experience and higher
degree of civic compromise?
